Product description
Grammy nominated and Mercury Prize nominated Laura Marling is back with her eighth studio album Patterns in Repeat. Now eight albums and 15+ years into her career as one of the most acclaimed, prolific and respected songwriters of her generation (multiple Grammy nominations, Mercury nods a Brit Award and more), in Patterns in Repeat Laura aims to occupy different spaces and continues to surprise: "Laura Marling is not quite who you might think she is". Written after the birth of her daughter in 2023 (and recorded with her in the room beside Laura), Patterns in Repeat now finds Laura reflecting on her own experience becoming a mother. The sounds are grounded in a specific and revelatory time in Laura's life, but more broadly dives deeper into her reckoning with the ideas and behaviours we pass down through family over generations. Almost entirely acoustic with minimal overdubbing and elegantly placed orchestral accents, this is the most focused, subtle and sharpest collection of Laura's career.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2024Often lost for words on the popular show, 'Strictly Come Dancing' judge Anton De Beke falls back on liberal use of the term "Joyous" to help him out. Overused by him it may well be, but here on Laura Marling's 'Patterns In Repeat' the description is certainly warranted. "I don't want to miss it" and "Who would rush right through it" sings Marling on the album's opening track 'Child Of Mine', stating her intent to savour every moment of motherhood. That same maternal pull arises later on the beautifully enchanting 'Lullaby' which - like the former - is touchingly expressed over a stripped back setting of folky acoustic guitar and understated strings. And, not unlike The Big Moon's Juliette Jackson on the latter's 'Here Is Everything' album, Marling neatly avoids 'Kooks' / 'Beautiful Boy' tweeness. In keeping with the sentiment of the song 'Patterns' her sagely prose mirrors the cycle of life, poignantly peering forward on 'The Shadows', and to the past on the self explanatory ''Looking Back'. Like the tender love dedications of 'Your Girl' and the piano tinkled 'No One's Gonna Love You Like I Can' these songs flourish and prosper in these dreamy chamber pop surroundings. On 'Caroline' it's almost if Marling is conversing face to face with the listener across a table as she struggles to remember a certain song ( as we all do sometimes ). But, even like the choo choo train like mellotron interlude, it all makes sense on an album that confirms what a smitten Charlie Fink of Noah And The Whale once sang of Marling: "Your voice could summon the angels"(only SHE could make the words "dirty underwear" sound so moving). And, for proof that she's lost none of her lyrical nous, look no further than the title track it comes from - "I tell it well, I try to sell them on the fact you were a match. Ever a scratch from bursting into flames". More laid back than her more recent releases, 'Patterns In Repeat' is nonetheless yet another worthy addition to Laura Marlings' incredible and prolific discography. To sum up in one simple word: Joyous.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2024All of Laura Marling's albums are great, and this is no exception. It has a very calming and melodic quality, great when you need to unwind. I forgot it came with a signed art card, so that was a nice surprise when it arrived.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 November 2024More lush sounds from the very talented LM….I still prefer the previous album though I think 😊
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2024I wonder if the reason "Patterns in Repeat" has such a laid back & gentle sound is because Laura wrote & recorded the album whilst looking after her baby, or it might even have something to do with Laura touring her previous album "Songs for our Daughter" on her todd because of lock-down restrictions, which gave her the taste for recording something more intimate.
Whatever the reasons, "Patterns..." is a soumptuous collection of songs, with Laura at the height of her songwriting powers, it's a shame she couldn't have rocked out on one of the tracks, but it's still a perfect ablum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sounding record.
The crème vinyl looks gorgeous and it sounds amazing. Laura Marling as a mother sounds more hopeful than her previous works and as a new father myself I can relate to the overall message of the album. She deserves more credit for being a guitar goddess.
