The encountered difficulties of old film and slides
Fading colors
There are light absorbing color bodies which are present in dyes if the negatives and color slides are not well-processing and stored in proper condition. Color fading might occur because of the visible light, ultraviolet and solar heat.
Fungal attacks
Mold can attack the gelatin binder of any film format. Gelatin provides food for mold spores, and mold will grow on film stored in high humidity environments, particularly when the relative humidity exceeds 65%.
Decomposition
Sometimes, the photohraphic film was careless exposued to extreme environment such as heat, radiation, humidity or acidity of the explashed liguid, it may change the stability of a chemical compound in color dyes.
Plustek OpticFilm Series - The precise color and detail creates extraordinary enlargements from films and Slides

iSRD - a highly reliable and comprehensive solution for infrared-based dust and scratch removal.
Use iSRD to auto-detect and remove dust and scratches from the image.
Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully. Removing them one-by-one takes a tremendous amount of time, since often hundreds or thousands of small defects (dust grains or lint) are found on the original image, which only becomes visible after digitization. Plustek OpticFilm has a reliable solution to this problem.
The OpticFilm 8300i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. The infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it.
iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows (Automatic)
- Step 1 : Use white light for regular RGB scan.
- Step 2 : Use infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only.
- Step 3 : Maker the dust and scratch on image.
- Step 4 : Calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.
In conclusion, OpticFilm 8300i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.
Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process, eliminating the need for post-process removal.
(PS: The scanner's infrared rays cannot permeate through the silver halide layer, so it not works for B/W negatives scanning, for B/W negatives please use SRDx function)

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 August 2022I have now scanned nearly 3000 slides with this and I am pleased I went for this one. The software with it was a bit daunting at first but I soon got the swing of how to process the thousands of slides I have. I have it down to a fine art now, place four slides into the holder, dust them off. Place the holder into the scanner and click the prescan icon. Two quick shortcut keys to reset the frame and auto settings. If the image needs fine tuning, there are numerous quick ways to do that. Then scan, usually about 10 seconds to scan and save. The auto numbering would be useful if you could define the names it used. I prefer to rotate to portrait in the file viewer separate to the software as it takes quite a few seconds to process, I have lost a few scans because of forgetting to wait. I now look through all the images in Windows viewer and rotate using that. These are minor niggles though. As I said, I am really pleased with this scanner, it has worked hard and well for a few weeks now
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2024Scan quality is very good and scan times are fast. Software that comes with the scanner allows good range of tweaks. Really happy with quality of scans and detail captured from the negatives. At max resolution scans are approx 250mb and capture good dynamic range.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 March 2024This is a well built unit with versatile software and I have worked my way through hundreds of 35mm slides, some of which were damaged or faded. The results are not as contrasty as cheaper slide scanners. It does negatives, but alas, only 35, not medium format which would have been a bonus. It didn't always play well with Photoshop Elements 24 and we had some crashes, but that's more about the Photoshop. You don't really need separate editing packages if you use Silverfast properly. It did improve the scratches and eliminated dust. The process isn't the fastest and the slide holder only takes a small number, but all in all, a good piece of equipment for salvaging your treasured memories on transparencies.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2024Loved the ease of use but as everyone says, use VueScan from Hamrick not the bundled package. Scans a lot faster than expected thank goodness (15 minutes I read somewhere? What were people trying to do?!)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2023It does everything it says on the tin, but the supplied software is a little tricky to use unless you buy the fully licenced version of Silverfast. Using the supplied software, Quickscan plus, you have a problem that once you have set the image to your preferences, you cannot go back and change what you did once you exit the setting window. The image while capable of being up to a very high resolution, the resulting image is not as sharp as the original 35mm slides, which is a bit disappointing after spending so much on this scanner. Although capable of 7200 DPI the optics are not significantly better than cheaper scanners. It seems to be sturdily built so should be capable of a high throughput if you have a lot of slides, but it is not fast.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2023I decided to go for the 8300i rather than the cheaper models to get an improvement inthe software and speed of scanning. The software is a bit clunky but once you get used to it, it does a great job. The scanning quality is certainly a massive step-up from my previous small negative scanner. I'm very happy with my purchase and would do the same again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2024The advert on غ UK clearly states that two of each type of holder (2xfilm & 2xslide) will be in the package. Sadly there is just one of each. غ help was not helpful and suggested I return the kit!
Our first efforts have been mediocre, probably due to user inexperience. Maybe we will discover the secrets to the promised amazing results as we learn and practice more - let's hope so!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2023Mostly reliable & works almost every time, like all things though, an error happens & it doesn’t scan the whole slide, my work around is to switch modes & rescan the slide, not sure if I can blame the scanner or my laptop for this.
The scanning isn’t a fast process, but it can recover something from all the slide’s & negatives I’ve put through so far, the editing software allows me to enlarge the subject too

5.0 out of 5 stars Très-très bon scanner!!

4.0 out of 5 stars très belle qualité d'images MAIS... diapositive coupées, et interdiction d'ouvrir l'appareil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guter Scanner

5.0 out of 5 stars Goede en simpele negatief scanner
