I’ve always hated fitting co-ax and f type connectors to cables. I’ve tried screw-on and crimped f connectors before but never Ed tried compression ones. I bought a new aerial distribution amp for my loft and decided to go for one with screw on connectors rather than push fit co-ax.

This tool from Percival is absolutely brilliant, so easy to use and the compression connectors are so much better than the screw-on and crimped type. They really grip the cable well and also noticed than the screw nut fitting on these plugs are much better quality than previous plugs I’ve tried.

The supplied cable stripper is also a cut above the rest (excuse the pun) of the one supplied by some other sellers of similar tools. It has a twin blade arrangement which prepares the co-ax cable perfectly in one simple action, just clamp the cable and turn the stripper tool 3 or 4 complete rotations and the jobs done. The connectors push on easily, an inner metal sleeve pushes itself between the inner and outer insulation of the cable to make a perfect connection with the shielding braid and the inner core protrudes just the right length. The plug just slips into the crimper tool and I was very surprised that so little squeeze pressure is required to close the compression ring, so light even a child could do it.
In conclusion, this tool is great! Wish I’d found it years ago, it would have saved so much time and effort.

To be clear I’m NOT blaming the tool as such, more a be careful.

I love the coax stripper and the compression aspect and plugs its a 5 star, what caught me out was the numerous other blades on the tool handle. When twisting the handle round and round as required to cut the cable, my finger slipped inside the handle and I cut myself badly. I didn’t take enough note of the numerous blades in the handle.

As the handle blades can be easily removed by unscrewing them, I have removed them. I now no longer run the risk of cutting myself.

Just a cautionary tale, I still like the tool and plugs, just needed to make it safer for me !

This system works well once you get the hang of it and identify the quirks.
1. When making the first cut, line up the end of the cable with the outside edge of the cutter, or a bit beyond.
2. Take care to steady the cable and cutter so that the cutter doesn't tilt as you rotate it around the cable.
3. When making the last cut, repeat (2), but also use the edge of your finger to keep the orange cutter block from slipping sideways out of the cutter.
4. If you want to remove the inner shield, you will have to use a craft knife, especially if there are strands of copper wire.
5. Straighten the central core wire of the cable so that it is straight whatever angle you view it from.
5. There is a sharp-ended tube inside the plug. That HAS to go between the outer covering of the cable and the shield around the cable. It will do that automatically IF you make sure the central core wire comes through the plug without fouling the inside of the front half, so check more than once.
6. the cable and plug need to be pushed together firmly. If you are pushing on the silver ring at the cable end of the plug, the crimp section will start to collapse, so push the front part of the plug body.
7. Check the insulation doesn't poke too far through the plug. A millimetre or so is OK, and flush is ideal.
8. Crimping is easy if you take a moment to wiggle the assembled plug into position before squeezing the handles.
9. Test the cable and plug with a multimeter to make sure there are no shorts.
The end result is a nice neat firm assembly of cable and plug.

It wasn’t so bad at the beginning. The cutters cutter the cable as advertised.

My problem came when crimping into the cable itself.
I tried several times reading instructions over and over. And basically the crimps just didn’t grip the cable and fitting just pulled off with the slightest of touches.

I had to pad my cable out with some electrical tape. Then heat shrink tube the otter case to the cable.

(Update)

So I do believe an update is required after several week after purchase.
Even though I had some issues with crimping, I had been in contact with the company directly, they had sorted out my issue regarding the crimp and have assured me this has been revised.

Even though I had mixed review upon this item I would however buy again from this company purely because they was in constant, polite communication and they amended the issue with the tool.

I had dodgy TV signals from my Loftbox due to my poor termination of F Type plugs; both poor signal strength and cables easily pulling out. This unit has fixed all that.
OK; a couple of things. Practice the wire-stripping on a piece of spare cable first. Clip the wire cutter round the cable then see how many twists (turns) you need to get the perfect cut; in my case just over 4. If you use too few, the dielectric will not have been cut through. If you use too many, the whole thing will have been cut through. Get it right and the (1) outside sheath and dielectric is cut-off then (2) the outside insulation and inside screen is cut leaving just the right amount of dielectric remaining all in one operation. Then carefully insert the cable into the connector and push in (twist if necessary) until the dielectric just starts to show inside. Stop now. If there is excessive central conductor showing then shorten it, pop the plug into the crimper and squeeze. Now trim the central conductor. The result is a physically secure connection and good signal. so simple, so good.

I took it slowly on the first one because I've never used this kind of tools before. The rest of them were a breeze. Good solid product, great value for home use. I purchased this kit to make some properly sized connector cables for my TV cable distribution panel. The kit contains everything that you need including connectors, and everything is build solidly. I don' expect any problems in the foreseeable future.

You DO have to know how to use these tools properly or you'll go down in flames. Here are some hints.

The first thing is to make sure that the wire that you plan to use is the correct size. Older coax cable isn't thick enough. The simplest way to make sure you have the correct cable is to cut the end off, then slide it into the connector. The fit should be SNUG. If there's any side-to-side play AT ALL, you have the wrong size cable for the connectors that come with the kit. I included a photo that may help.

Second, you have to strip the correct amount of the inner and outer jacket. For those of you that don't "do" metric, I've included a photo. Strip 5/8" of the outer jacket, and 1/2" of the inner insulator that will then be exposed.

Third, when inserting the cable into the connector, push and twist until the white insulator is at the very end of the inner "tube" of the connector. That gets the outer jacket far enough into the connector for it to be captured when you compress the connector.

If I were Preciva, I'd consider marking or etching measurements on either of the tools, to make getting the stripping measurements right a bit easier. That's a minor quibble, plus I have a Sharpie and i'm not afraid to use it.
