- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2020I bought this CD as I had heard a small section of it from a television programme. That section appealed to me and I bought the CD. I did this to mark a new beginning in my life; my divorce. A trusted and very shrewd friend had suggested earlier that I should mark this occasion, after which I then heard the afore-mentioned section from the TV programme, so I went ahead.
I was familiar with Puccini, having bought La Bohème some years back. The good thing about this package is that, while there is no libretto supplied, the Acts are broken down into individual tracks, or chapters if you like, and each one has an explanation of what is going on. Maybe other operatic CDs do the same, but in any case this made it very easy to follow. That said, the storyline is one of love, infidelity and heartbreak, with final tragedy at the end. Listening to it was a very moving experience, especially for someone like me who is experiencing the pain of change and moving on.
Well worth it, in terms of sound quality, vocal and instrumental quality and of marking a new beginning.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 February 2017I was going to return this as I thought it was a DVD but now I can't part with it . I don't believe there is any recording by this artist I would want to part with. He is a genius and I cannot imagine a more complete musician that Jonas Kaufman. So very glad he is back in circulation, someone tell him that his fans would rather hear him less often and for more years than know that our appreciation has caused him pain!!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 June 2012Swift delivery and what a wonderful recording it is!
Great singing and stunning orchestration the best I've ever heard this wonderful Opera ever sung and played, I just wish it were a DVD because I'd love to see the production as well as hear its glorious sounds!
If you know Puccini you will love this set of discs... If you do not know this Opera then you are in for a wonderful experience! I cannot praise it high enough!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2015It must be quite a decision to commit to a new studio recording of a well known piece like this given the large number of other versions. Cio Cio San will be compared in an instant to Tebaldi, Freni, Scotto, Callas and all the rest. Angela Gheorghiu sings it beautifully and with some pathos, Jonas Kaufman is splendid and can compare with the best. The recording itself is excellent, the voices are captured almost ideally and there is no microphone noise and colouration on Kaufman for once. So I am pleased with this as a thoroughly modern recording with an excellent cast, yes I still prefer Renata Scotto as Butterfly, and still enjoy Tebaldi's version; This one deserves it place among its illustrious forebears too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2015Superb cast, acting as well as they sing - this is what opera is all about.. And Pappano nurtures the score with all the passion and tragic power it demands. I grew up with the Tebaldi recording but this is so much better with all round performances from Kaufman and Gheorghiu
outstanding. As a version of this Puccini masterpiece I'll return to it frequently

5.0 out of 5 stars Gheorigiu - eine tolle Frau!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Madama Butterfly Recording!
All the bad press aside,Angela Gheorghiu truly is the greatest soprano ever.American audiences have been denied this beautiful voice due to joe volpe's blacklisting of her from the world's premier opera house.I suppose Renee Fleming should be grateful for that move.Perhaps her career wouldn't have had such a meteoric rise.Like all of us,Angela's voice is a little less steady than it was 10 years ago.But the limpid beauty is there in abundance. She is Butterfly.I am angry because I know she'll never be asked to perform it at the Met.To perform at the Met is to receive the ultimate stamp of affirmation. When I hear her, I think of Callas without all the exaggerated vibrato.
The love duet with Jonas Kaufman brings tears to my eyes. The naivety of her "Un bel di" is heartbreaking.I regret that Angela will not receive the adoration she so richly deserves.Mr. Kaufman is also wonderful in this opera. His dark manly voice was a welcome change from the lightness of past tenors. The sound quality of this recording is amazing. Her "Tosca" also sets a standard for all singers to emulate.Angela, your commitment to your art is obvious and I thank you for that.
