I was interested to try these out as I'd heard of negative ion air purifiers but never used one.

This is a box of 3 units. You plug the unit in and a red light will show that it's working. It can provide ambient lighting which can be blue, warm white or you can turn it off.

There are 6 carbon fiber heads around the unit which need to be cleaned monthly. This is easily done by removing from the power supply and wiping the fiber heads with either a paper towel or a soft brush head.

Do these work? Yes they did make the air in the room feel fresher. I did some research to understand how they worked and Negative Ion purifiers work by creating a static charge around particles such as dust, pet dander, allergens etc but they don't clear them. Once charge with static the particles stick to surfaces in the room so they are not floating in the air, which makes the air seem cleaner as the particles are no longer floating freely, but they are still in the room and will be stuck to surfaces like walls, furniture and carpets. I think for many people this would be fine but if you suffer from allergies then perhaps an air purifier with a hepa filter might be a better option.

Presentation
The Dayear Plug In Negative Ion Air Purifier’s were supplied in a branded cardboard box, wrapped individually in a plastic sleeve and included instructions for use.

First Impressions
The three air purifiers are designed as a small wall plug device, much like a power control unit for home automation or a small Wi-Fi / Powerline type unit. The UK version I used has a standard UK three pin plug on one side and around three of its edges it has two small carbon fibre heads – so six in total, whilst the top edge has the LED switch button and indicator light. The front face has branding near the top, then a raised circular area with a figure six imprinted on it where an ambient light resides which changes colour or can be turned off depending on your selection.

Day To Day Use
I wanted to try these as a means to keep the air in the bedrooms a little fresher and cleaner during the winter months at least when windows tend to be closed for longer (if opened at all) and the air can become stale. However when used we did find that whilst the air did seem cleaner, a number of us were having more trouble breathing at night. To check this removed the units from two of the bedrooms and the issue went away for them. This gave me the impetus to do some research when I discovered that one of the side effects of this type of purifier can be irritation of the respiratory system including two symptoms we observed. With that in mind we are no longer using them as I consider them to have at least a few undesirable side effects.

Summing Up
Good presentation, and well designed units that are also well made. There is however no health related information provided which could – as in my case – lead to the belief that they are side effect free, which may be true for some, but not all.

1 device was broken. The face plate wasnt attached nor could it be so allthe internal wiring and circuits were exposed. Next one I plugged in and I got an electric shock when my hand brushed against the unit (my partner heard the zap) as I turned the plug switch on. I didn't even try the third.

Once I'd worked out that you can turn the unbelievably bright blue light off, I found these to be pretty good in the bedroom. The air does seem to be better, and I'm not so blocked up in the morning.

I like that they're so subtle, you don't really notice they're there. I'm sure they wouldn't be much use in a large area (not bothered trying them in our open plan downstairs), but in the bedrooms I'm pretty impressed. They're pretty much silent too, and they're cheap enough to run that you can leave them on 24/7. Very good!
