Product description

Product Description

In this edgy and darkly humorous Western, a mysterious young woman rides into the lawless town of Redemption to settle an old score that has haunted her since she was a child. She becomes swept up in a deadly quick-draw tournament and, in order to win her revenge, must compete in a contest in which gunslingers from all over put their lives on the line for fame and fortune.

ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk Review

Director Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead) tries gamely to recapture the exotic mysteries of spaghetti Westerns in this stylish but empty film, which stars Sharon Stone as a stranger who comes to the town of Redemption in time for an annual shooting contest. Her real motivations for being there are the stuff that might have found their way into a film by Sergio Leone--in fact, much of this film is a pastiche of Leone's greatest hits, including A Fistful of Dollars and Once upon a Time in America--but one can't quite believe Stone in the role. Gene Hackman gives a predictably solid performance as the town tyrant, and Leonardo DiCaprio is good as a lucky young gunslinger who gets to kiss the heroine. But not even the cast can help this failed project. Raimi brings a lot of razzle-dazzle to his camera work, but it doesn't make the film any more substantial. --Tom Keogh

Wasn’t at all sure what this was going to be like and my initial viewing did little to dispel those doubts, however, I’ve since watched it probably half a dozen times which should really tell you all you need to know. It is a fairly straightforward film but it has a good cast of lead actors so it’s worth taking the time to watch it. Overall a very enjoyable western romp!

I'm glad that I have the chance to be the first reviewer of this movie, for in general it was considered as a failure both for S Stone and S Raimi to resurrect style and hype of spaghetti-westerns.Despite its several flaws (like numerous annoying shots of the main characters' eyes staring intently at each other to enhance suspense, Ms Stone's at times blank face when it should reflect stronger emotions, some characters so bad and revolting that they make you chuckle), I've seen it for the second time and it made me grab my chair in childish excitement.
The plot is stark simple (see above, but in short a dozen rascals participating in a lethal shooting contest till last man standing), as well as the reasons driving the main characters to participate in the murderous contest: Ms Stone - to avenge her father, the Kid (L d Caprio) - to win his father's respect, Herod (J Hackman) - to keep townsfolk submissive and to teach his best and repented "pupil" Cort (R Crow) a lesson of abeyance, others - for money (but they don't matter).
True, leading actors carry out the plot on their steady shoulders: * R. Crow emanates sexual charisma and suppressed prowess (long before world wide fame as macho Maximus the Gladiator) even if he spends all the movie shackled and beaten. ...*L de Caprio is well into the shape of boyish and outside haughty/inside weak-trying-to-prove-he's-better-than-his-father, long before downpour of post-Titanic fame. *J Hackman isthe perfect scoundrel, ageing scavenger, full stop. As to * Sh Stone, she remains one of the sassiest and talented actresses for me(praise her, fore she spends 2/3 of the movie rather disheveled), despite several movie flops she's participated in. She's carried her role well, with mixed feelings of despair, indifference and revulsion (at least I can't imagine any other actress in this role).
The end is unexpected and is not a usual annoying happy-end. What more do you need? Watch and enjoy and don't compare this movie with any earlier masterpieces. ...it may count S Raimi's best movie so far.

Seriously underrated film. The disc played without any issues.

Reading some of the reviews of this movie, it's quite clear that it is a very misunderstood picture indeed.

The Quick and the Dead is not a western. It's a 'best of' compilation that both celebrates and satirises the common tropes of the genre, much like Once Upon A Time In The West did back in the 60s.

If you watch TQATD out of context, it seems like a bland, clichéd and formulaic film. But if you recognise what it is, it's a sharp, funny, engaging and surprisingly complex piece of work.

The Western is a tough genre to tackle in the modern age, more so when it's post 1992 Unforgiven's masterclass 101. But tackling both these challenges is nothing to the one which director Sam Raimi asks of the audience in his stab at the genre; a female gun slinger played by a Hollywood beauty. Sharon Stone isn't right for the lead role here, she obviously looks gorgeous and she broods and pouts better than most of her modern day peers. But she lacks a menacing streak, a bit of believable nastiness that just might have lifted the film to better heights. We understand and expect the vulnerability she shows, but to succeed here in the testosterone fuelled town of Redemption she's going to have to convince as a tough gal. And Stone just isn't up to the task.

The film does have good points to enjoy tho, very much so. The story, although gimmicky, works well as an entertaining popcorn munching tale, while the cast list reads like a whose who of solid and quality thespers (Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DeCaprio, Keith David, Pat Hingle & Lance Henriksen). Also into the plus column is the always impressive cinematography from Dante Spinotti, and there is no denying Sam Raimi's keen eye for detail; with his zooming shots a real treat during the shoot out sequences. But in spite of this, and acknowledging that the makers have tried something different, The Quick & The Dead isn't quick enough on the draw to outlive it's leading lady misstep. 6/10

Did not realise it was a used product, having said that the case and disc were ok,no marks or scratched at all, and the film played perfectly with no problems.
The film was very good, good cast and what I want in a film, to be entertaining and it definitely was,
A very good buy I will be using this company again.
