Product description
Following on from the success of 2020's deluxe reissue of 'Vienna', Chrysalis Records are proud to release a 40th Anniversary of the bands second album with Midge Ure, 'Rage In Eden'. Originally released in October 1981 and like the bands previous two albums, it was produced by Conny Plank (Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!), this time recorded at Conny's studio in Cologne during the summer of '81.
This new 6 Disc box set contains 52 tracks, with 22 previously unreleased recordings. CD's 1 to 5 contain the original 1981 album production master, a new stereo mix by Steven Wilson, A-sides, B-sides & live tracks along with previously unreleased cassette rehearsals and a newly mixed concert recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in October 1981. The DVD (Audio Only) contains a new 5.1 Surround Sound Mix of the Album/B-sides by Steven Wilson along with 24/96 Hi-Res audio of the new mixes and the original 1980 Master/B-sides.
The set is packaged in a 12"x12" Rigid Slipcase and contains a 20 page 12" square booklet featuring contributions from the band, unseen photos from Midge Ure's and Chris Cross' personal collection, reproduction of the Rage In Eden tour programme, 6 discs in card wallets housed in two 12" gatefold album sleeves.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2013The review in Record Mirror of Ultravox's 1981 `Rage in Eden' album described it as "Tepid in the extreme ... a complete lack of ideas", but Melody Maker declared of it: "Confirmation, consolidation, and CLASS." Record Mirror laughed and proceeded to fall, not lasting as long as their rivals.
I was there in 1981, and smitten: `Rage in Eden' is a passionate album, full of anger and angst: perfect for a sixteen-year-old Romantic. `Vienna' was always going to be a hard act to follow, but - dare I say it - `Rage in Eden' is even better, with both `The Voice' and `The Thin Wall' as definitely five-star tracks. Indeed, there is no duff track throughout this set (although `Accent on youth' does underperform).
The lack of an instrumental is made up for by extended sections at the heart of songs or at their end: the two-minutes of `The Ascent' is really a segued continuation of `Accent on Youth'. Quite a few of the tracks are over six minutes in length, with `Stranger Within' over seven.
This is a review of the remastered two-disc set released by Chrysalis in 2008. The remastered sound seems to favour the guitar, and the music seems to have lost some of the original's wall-of-sound epic atmosphere, resulting in a more disparate feel to the noise. It therefore has less focus, less heart, but is more solid: the difference is, to say the least, `interesting'.
The second disc of this set provides sixty-six minutes of extras: B-sides, live versions, works-in-progress. The strength of `Rage in Eden' is shown by even the B-sides being strong tracks. To me, `Rage in Eden' is Ultravox's greatest album, but those who know this "will always feel their backs against the thin wall."

I bought this really for 2 b-sides which introduced my to the rest of the album.
“I never wanted to begin” and “paths and angles” I had played over and over- so have them on 5.1 surround was a must!
The whole album is amazing - and the 5.1 mixes are brilliant! I am not a fan of live recordings but the whole project of mixes for me is first rate!!
Beautiful packaging and worth every penny!
5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing box set!I was a bit young to really get into this album - I bought Quartet and it still remains one of my all time favourite albums!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2022as a huge Ultravox Midge Ure fan, this is a terrific addition to my collection. I already have the 40th Anniversary Vienna special edition.
Rage in Eden, I feel, was the band’s finest moment. A great collection of songs. Your name has slipped my mind again is, I think, a haunting song and remains one of my favourite tracks. If you are a Ultravox fan, you’ll love this collection. If not, try the original Rage in Eden album/CD. It might just convert you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2008On the whole this came off as slightly disappointing after the brilliant lead-off single "The Thin Wall", which was accompanied by my all-time favourite promotional video. All tracks have a dark, somewhat wintery, claustrophobic ambience about them but frequently go on too long, and despite some excellent arrangements and fantastically pompous lyrics, the production and engineering, when compared to other releases of the era, isn't exactly mindblowing and a bit too flat for my liking. ("The Voice" and the title track suffered from a noise reduction error, rectified in this 2008 edition, which unlike most current reissues has actually been remastered with great care from the original master tapes.)
Ultimately, what lets "Rage In Eden" down is its dull second half (bridge aside, the 7 minutes plus of "Stranger Within" are excruciating, as is the delayed bass drum in "Your Name") and the fact that the majority of the budget and time seems to have gone into recording "The Thin Wall", while the remaining tracks appear somewhat rushed and unfinished. The simplistic drum programming is annoying too. That said, 27 years on I still feel strangely attracted. The album bravely if not always successfully highlights Ultravox' experimental side, has a better flow than "Vienna" and constitutes the defining manifesto for the New Romantics.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 August 2012To me this is the best Ultravox album - it is packed with great tracks, has a more consistent feel and message than its also very good predecessor Vienna and, save for a few stratospheric highs in Quartet, all their following albums are but pale shadows. I already had the vinyl and the original not-remastered CD release and I will confirm that on my HiFi this remaster sounds very good. There are, of course, plenty of extra tracks in the 2 CD release too all of which are welcome and worthwhile. It's also great to see the excellent original Rage In Eden artwork make a reappearance in the "furniture" of its plusher than average CD package but I believe this will revert back to the "horses" on later copies due to licensing limitations (so buyers, don't be surprised if the picture you see in this advert isn't the one you receive). I'm altogether delighted with the fresh life that this Definitive Edition has breathed into one of my all time favourite albums and recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The look and the sound of the voice… never looked or sounded better. Zero surface noise, the cleanest and deepest bass of any edition of the album, the best separation and all beautifully presented. Well worth the wait and the outlay. I have yet to try the other CD and clear vinyl box sets but this half speed vinyl is excellent.

Just rec'd. this and can't believe how great the sound is.....something I would have imagined in my imagination....I'll probably end up buying the clear vinyl later because it's so pretty.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how to honor a great band
Ulltravox during Midge Ure's tenure was the most successful lineup of this group. Chrysalis has honored them by releasing a deluxe set of their classic albums from the '80s that is well-conceived, and offers live performances, rare B-sides, released & unreleaed 12" mixes, and demos to entice long-term fans as well as new listeners. This is how a label should honor their prolific artists. Too many lame thrown-together cash-grab compilations flood the marketplace by major artists these days. I'm happy this is not one of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rage in eden 40th anniversary cd box
Wznowienie "Rage in Eden" 2022r. jest kontynuacją boxu Vienna z 2020r. i stylistycznie nawiązuje do serii. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje 4 i 5 cd koncertowe, jest szybko, rytmicznie z masą dominującej elektroniki. Widać że zespół z nowym materiałem muzycznym jeszcze eksperymentuje.
