It’s very likely that even if you haven’t heard the contents of Radiohead’s seventh album, you’ll be aware of its existence. Released as a digital download by the band themselves before a CD release was even considered, In Rainbows was lauded for innovation before a note of music was heard. Luckily, the music matches the hype--it takes the best part of Radiohead's previous works and advances the formula even further. While the opener "15 Step"--all skittering drum patterns and dub-style bass--may hark back to the electronica of Kid A, the sound soon gives way to a more guitar-based sound. Whilst not as musically heavy as previous albums, the tunes are far more focused and passionate--"Bodysnatchers" is based around a hypnotic, distorted bass riff, while the beautiful string-drenched "Nude" is a true Radiohead classic. Lyrically, like Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser, the lyrics are sketches of suburban paranoia, and the eerie sense of things no! t being quite right. This is especially true on the piano-based closer "Videotape", which poignantly details a man watching his life’s achievements in his final moments. In short, In Rainbows is another masterpiece from the Oxford quintet. --Thomas Allott

Originally a free mp3 download release, digital meets analog, this album sounds absolutely superb on 180gr vinyl a really great addition to my collection, if your a fan you should go out and get it. The vinyl is quite and the recording is dynamic, spot on.

Good quality, came in paper case rather than plastic but overall super happy with it

I have waited 4½ years for this album and it was worth it. It's fantastic, sounds nothing like Radiohead have ever recorded, yet is still recognisable as Radiohead from the first 5 seconds of mashed-up drums that introduce '15 Step'. It's lush yet sparse. The strings (and there are a lot of strings on this record) are beautiful - the arrangements really show off Jonny Greenwood's classical leanings - and Thom's voice is amazing, despite years of touring and knocking on 40's door. Every time I hear the songs, I pick up something new. I highly recommend you give it a listen on headphones at some point - it's a real trip.

OK, they are my favourite band, so I am bound to be a little biased, but even so, one thing about this record compared to their last (2003's 'Hail to the Thief') is how immediate it is. Usually a new Radiohead record takes a few plays to gel, especially the more tricky electronic stuff, but not 'In Rainbows' (which doesn't feature as much of the sort of electronic beeps and bleeps that have characterised their last three albums) - every song has a hook or melody that will draw you in.

    15 Step
This song starts with a weird Kid-A-ish cut-up drum sound before Thom starts singing, then about 40 seconds in the jazzy guitar kicks in. By the end of the song we even have small children yelping in a Floydesque moment that few bands could get away with it. Brilliant, attention grabbing opener.

    Bodysnatchers
In which, as one blogger described, Radiohead turn into Sonic Youth. This track will blow your socks off. It features a fuzzed-up distorted guitar that sounds like it was recorded through a cheap practise amp turned up to 11.

    Nude
A candidate for the most beautiful Radiohead song ever recorded. When Thom sings 'You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking' the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

    Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
The guitar work on this song is up there with anything they have recorded in the past. Another song that builds up, hangs you in the air for a moment and then kicks you into space.

    All I Need
Thom's voice full of echo lamenting on how he's an animal trapped in your hot car and stuff. This builds up and and up until he's shouting 'It's alright! It's alright!' The band members come in slowly and the crescendo you know is coming satisfies the parts other bands cannot reach.

    Faust Arp
In which Radiohead have a 'Blackbird' moment, so lots of acoustic and another epic build-up. Shortest song on the album, and features an almost-stream-of-conciousness lyric a la 'Wolf At The Door' from 'Hail to the Thief'.

    Reckoner
My current favourite. It sounds nothing like the song called 'Reckoner' they played live a few years ago - even the lyrics are different. Hard to describe this one, but it could be their best for a long time. The drumming really takes this song over, especially in the first half. There is an infectious guitar line which, mid-way through, gives over to a similar piano riff. Thom sings in a falsetto that is pretty hard to decipher without repeated headphone sessions.

    House Of Cards
One of my favourite tracks from the 2006 tour. The staccato-ish guitar lick really makes this song, and Thom's whole 'use your voice as an instrument' really pays off. The bassline has shades of U2. Honest! There is also, IIRC, a sound created by Jonny playing a guitar with a violin bow.

    Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Known as 'Open Pick' on last years tour, this is an amazing guitar number that starts with Thom singing in an almost lazy manner, before, half-way through, kicking it up a notch. Jangly and, well, a bit epic.

    Videotape
A perfect closer. Thom, a piano and an off-kilter out-of-phase drum beat that really messes with your head. Marvellous.

I'd not listened to any Radiohead in awhile, having been turned off by the direction they'd taken in recent years, until I encountered a basement concert where they played through the whole of this album. It's absolutely banging art rock with a mournful edge among the celebration. For someone who felt a bit lost in their more synth heavy years, this felt like a return to form without being lost in nostalgia.

Review No 103 to date and if you're a Radiohead head you probably wont have read any of them before rushing out to buy or download this magnificent piece of musical mastery. So I suppose this is for the newcomers, and there will be plenty. Do you know that approximately one million people celebrate their 16th birthday every year, and that's just in the UK. 'In Rainbows' is a good place to launch your Radiohead obsession. It's probably the most accessable album since 'The Bends', its easy to get on with. You could describe it as 'easy listening' by Radiohead's standards. You wont have the same relationship that you might have with 'Kid A' or 'Amnesiac'( my favourite RH albums)It will be your friend for life, no mood swings or the silent treatment. No tantrums or funny looks. 'In rainbows' will, quite simply , be your best mate until you croak. Please don't buy the singles. Why Radiohead ever decided to be a singles band is beyond me. Stick to the albums and enjoy the concepts. Once you've grasped them you'll really start to enjoy the music.
Anyway what do you think to this. When I first heard Radiohead, a couple of days after they'd released 'The Bends' I was a mere thirtysomething. Now that I'm a fiftysomething I have a bit of a problem with my pork pies, yes it's good that they're using more paper as opposed to plastic in order to reduce the said carbon footprint and hence save the planet, but the lyrics are printed so small I have to have every light in the house on so I can read them...... Thom you haven't thought this through, if you want to save the planet print the bloody words BIGGER!!

This is a steady album, plays well and best as one piece of music. Like it but it's no Ok Computer or The Bends.

Recently, I've been trying to get vinyl copies of music that meant a lot to me over the years. In Rainbows brings me back to the fall of 2007, walking home from work in Winnipeg. Long story short, it's a great album from beginning to end.

When I opened the package, I immediately played it on my record player. Something was off—I noticed a clicking sound on the first track and wondered why it didn’t sound like it did back in 2007. I took a careful look at the record and saw a scratch going through the first song, causing a click on every rotation. To fix this, I filled out the return form on Saturday evening. غ shipped a replacement record, which arrived on Monday and has been absolutely perfect so far.
    tl;dr: great record
