To their number must be added Kirill Kondrashin, whose magnificent 1980 version with the incomparably eloquent Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam combines heaps of story-telling flair, thrusting cogency and bewitching sensuousness to unforgettable effect. Just the merest whisper of background hiss betrays the recording's analogue origins, but the sound emanating from your speakers will blow most the digital opposition out of the water in its sumptuous glow and riveting sense of spectacle. And that's not all: Igor Markevitch directs the same band in a powerfully clangorous rendering of the by turns solemn and exultant Russian Easter Festival Overture, switching to the London Symphony Orchestra (at the very peak of its form) for a superb account of the exuberant Capriccio espagnol.
