Product description
Fontaines D.C. announce details of their highly-anticipated fourth album, ROMANCE. Released on 23rd August via XL Recordings, ROMANCE is the band’s first album with producer James Ford and is without doubt their most assured, inventive and sonically adventurous record yet. It’s set to build on the success of the Dublin-made, now London-based band’s acclaimed 2022 album Skinty Fia, which reached number 1 in the UK and Irish album charts and saw the band receiving a host of accolades including “International Group of the Year” at the 2023 BRIT Awards.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 September 2024As a huge fan of Fontaines D.C., I can confidently say that Romance is my favorite album by the band. The standout track for me is “In the Modern World”, which perfectly captures the raw energy and lyrical depth that Fontaines D.C. is known for.
The quality of this limited clear vinyl is superb—it has a rich sound that enhances the listening experience. I was also pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of the lyrics for all the songs, making it easier to dive deeper into the themes and emotions of the album.
Overall, if you’re a fan of the band or a vinyl collector, this is a must-have!
In addition to the lyrics it also comes with some pretty funky artwork.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2024The only modern band I follow, with three releases that were increasingly brilliant. I still feel a thrill listening to them. Romance was different. Took a few listens to get into, but the more I listen, the more I'm disinterested. The album has one song, Starburst, that will probably be memorable in a decade or so, but the rest is boring catchy pop and seems to be influenced by nineties sounds, I hear Charlatans and even a touch of oasis. C'mon, forget the fame and excite an auld man before he dies disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Limitless Possibility, Excitement, Introspection, and Transcendence
I first encountered Fontaines on May 4, 2019, just weeks after the release of their debut album, "Dogrel". I was in a cab in Dublin, and "Boys in the Better Land" came on the radio. I was exhilarated and confused, thinking this was possibly some decades-old group I had missed, and I began furiously writing lines in my notebook to Google when we got on hotel wifi, in an effort to find out- "Who is this band!?"
I returned from that trip with a copy of "Dogrel", which I listened to obsessively back in the US, finding the band to exist in an aesthetic reality entirely without direct comparison. They carried elements of early punk and post-punk, and interviews with the band revealed that they had a deep bench musically, with a fondness for The Pixies and The Pogues. Much was made of the fact the members met as university students, and their shared love of Irish literature, and how that carried influence into the songs.
Each attempt to define and categorize the band felt elusive. They are not a sum of their influences. They are what all great artists are- lovers of culture, who with great taste and curation have been exposed to wonderful music, writing, film and art, drawing inspiration to fuse with personal experience, observation, and the unique sparks of artistry in their hearts, frontman Grian Chatten in particular, to craft a sound and space of their own making.
Following the band through the Dublin-centric "Dogrel", through the dark and ennui-laden followup albums "A Hero's Death", informed by touring the US, and "Skinty Fia", which drew from the experience of Dubliners forging new lives in London, we come to their latest, "Romance".
This may be their finest album, and if that is debatable, it at least stands as the equal of "Dogrel", a debut so perfect, that I thought it could not be matched. With producer James Ford, the band have opened a new chapter in their evolution, bringing delicacy, intricacy, and orchestral arrangements to the tracks. The album is enigmatic and full of mystery and wonder, as if life is a work in progress, and this is not merely "a band making music", but artists to their core, giving the listener a window into their comprehensive aesthetic (They have cited album influences as the city of Tokyo and the film "Akira").
To put words to it feels a bit in vain, as to try and define and categorize true art, with its inherent sense of evolution, and existence sprung from the artist's own interiority, is to try and shackle and bring to heel with words, what must be left to roam and spellbind. This is not a group that you can ever tame and put in a box. They offer limitless possibility, excitement, introspection, and transcendence, with "Romance" a stunning encapsulation of that state of creation.
