BEN MACINTYRE is a best-selling author of military and espionage history. He has written and presented several films for BBC TWO from his books, including Operation Mincemeat.
Ben has been hand-picked by the SAS to exclusively tell their story, gaining access that no civilian has ever been granted. Each day in the SAS archives leads to a new discovery, as Ben pieces together this story for the first time.
The history of the SAS is an exhilarating tale of fearlessness and heroism, recklessness and tragedy; of extraordinary men who were willing to take monumental risks. It is a story of the meaning of courage.

I knew many of these men especially my good friends Johnny & Reg. They will always have a place in the hearts of my family. If anyone made a movie based on what these men did people would say it was exaggerate, but that is what happened. They and their families sacrificed so much for all of us, and so we owe it to them to remember. This series of three programs gives a small insight into the full nature of their operations during WW2, but so much more is out their on record for anyone wanting it. It has taken many years for their stories to be told, and so it is good to see that in the past ten to twenty years authors have realised the real value of these men in establishing todays SAS, whom we all respect. Ben Macintyre comes across as someone who genuinly wants to put their story in the proper place, without the over the top drama and machio types that you see on tv shows of late and for that I thank him. These were just ordinary men from many different backgrounds brought together during a time in history when our country was on it's knees ......but they stood up. Thank you for our wonderful memories together......RIP.
This is the 'official' story as presented by Ben MacIntyre. Unfortunately it repeats the old story about David Stirling's almost sole importance in the SAS, largely igoring the crucial role played at the time by men like Bill Stirling and Paddy Mayne. Indeed the latter is portrayed mostly as a drunkard and bully until the last episode, repeating Stirling's lie that Mayne was 'doing time' when Stirling picked him for the SAS. And 2 SAS is not mentioned at all in the three hour series. Not a bad series and certainly enjoyable, but be aware it's not the full and true story.
