Alright Film (awfully boxed)
The film was actually a very good watch with an ending that’ll leave everyone & probably has left everyone who’s already seen it asking the exact same question! Now I won’t go into the film that much & spoil it for many who haven’t seen it but if you like Star Wars it’s a decent watch. This Solo movie cost me more than the Original Trilogy & more than The Prequels Trilogy & it doesn’t even have a simple folded inner sleeve or leaflet & as you can see by my photos provided it came with an old school security tag on it that stripped a little off the outer ‘Collectable Sleeve’ & the DVD holder was broken so the DVD was rattling around inside the case that is inside the ‘Collectable Sleeve’ that was inside unharmed ÍøÆغÚÁÏ packaging?!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2018Don't take my Star Wars reviews as honest, unbiased views.. I'm totally biased!. And therefore my review is probably not the best reference; Star Wars has been and remains a big part of my life ever since the first movie came out 600 hundred years ago (there is an understatement in there, and I'm not Yoda). I don't take the movies too seriously and see them merely as highly entertaining space opera, while I adore the atmosphere, the characters and the vastness of the universe.
I would rank Solo among my top-5 Star Wars movies (but again that says nothing as one of these 5 would be the much-hated Phantom Menace..)
Why Solo didn't do as well as expected at the box office? - my understanding is that it is because of timing, mostly (too soon after the debateable Last Jedi) and due to a lack of promotion. In my view there really isn't anything in the movie itself that justifies the outcome; it's funny, it’s a visual spectacle, it's about friendship and we get to explore much more of the Star Wars universe. Perhaps some found the storyline a bit bland, but that aspect didn’t deter me at all, probably because I'm biased. If anything, I thought story-wise it was an interesting enough heist-movie with some decent twists, at a minimum. And Star wars isn’t particularly well-known for its appealing story lines- at least an ultimate weapon didn't have to be destroyed before time ran out this time around..
There are many reports about Solo being an ‘unnecessary movie’, however to me it’s a great and welcome backstory on several main characters. Not only Han, but also Lando, Chewie .. and the Millennium Falcon! Morover Solo introduces you to an almost unprecedented range of new locations; Corellia, Mimban, Vandor, Kessel, the Bis Refinery on the planet Savareen and not to mention Dryden Vos’ space yacht..
All this is presented in a visually stunning manner, which you would expect as this is apparently the most expensive Star Wars movie created so far.
Initially I had my doubts about the movie given that ‘Han’ is such a sensitive subject. And then we had Alden Ehrenreich requiring an acting teacher and a directors change... So perhaps my expectations weren’t too high, certainly not after the Last Jedi.. However I think Ron Howard did a great job given the challenges he must have faced.
The movie deliberately lacks traditional elements that perhaps some of the audience got tired of; the Skywalkers, lightsabers, Jedi, C3PO, opening crawl ect. It nevertheless remains a classic Star Wars movie. To me L3 is the absolute star followed by the pan-sexual (!) rustler Lando.
Shame the movie wasn’t the financial success Disney must have anticipated. Now we might not get an answer on Qira’s whereabouts and the link with a certain ‘Dantomerian’ soon (trying to avoid spoilers here).
We buy 3D Blu Ray’s where possible. You pay up for it but they enhance a great family-film evening. Solo in 3D looks very sharp and natural on our fairly high-end Oled LG TV, that gets supported by proper surround sound. I must say I tend to like 3D viewing more at home than in cinema’s these days. And Solo in 3D is particularly well-done; all looks very pleasant and natural to watch without excessive blast and parts flying towards your face.
Also we quite liked the extra's that came with the 3D Blu Ray set; the kids appreciated the short documentaries that revealed part of the magic behind film making and special effects. I quite liked the cut scenes in particular like Han’s trial as an imperial cadet and an extended Corellia chase.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2023The Blu-ray 3D DVD of Solo: A Star Wars Story was the second in the spin-off (standalone) movie productions from the mainstream Star Wars franchise. It was released in 2018 in its 3D Blu-ray and 2D Blu-ray DVD versions. The package under review contains single discs for both 3D and 2D versions, as well as a third disc containing bonus material. At the current purchase price, the package, which comes in an attractive single plastic box with movable inserts for each of the three discs, is good value.
The movie itself is a story with a series of episodes depicting the adventures of a young Han Solo (played creditably by Alden Ehrenreich), joined at various stages of the movie by characters, notably Chewbacca (his future co-pilot on board the Millenium Falcon spacecraft) and the notorious gambler, Lando Calrissian, who share his desire to fight against the dangerous criminal underworld. Some of the other characters in the movie are played by well-known actors, e.g., Woody Harrelson, Emelia Clarke, Paul Bettany, and Thandi Newton.
The movie does not have the gravitas, nor the excitement or relevance, of the mainstream Star Wars movies. However, it has its own entertainment value and helps to fill in some of the background gaps to the main series of films, as well as provide a different, but inclusive, narrative. So, the movie has distinctive value, and its production was overseen by some of those persons who oversighted the nine mainstream Star Wars productions.
The 3D image was most realistic and, with the addition of Dolby Digital sound, the movie’s production and entertainment values were most acceptable. This would also be true of the 2D version. The bonus material, though of varying interest, will appeal to some. One newspaper critic’s comments, viz., that the movie 'Delivers exactly what you want', may not be entirely true, but Solo: A Star Wars Story delivers enough to justify its purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mejor pelÃcula fan service sub valorada por el fandom

5.0 out of 5 stars gros coup de coeur

5.0 out of 5 stars il film è bello, qualità video e audio mediocre
