Product description

Marillion released its studio album debut, Script for a Jester's Tear, in March 1983. The record was certified platinum in the band's native U.K. where it reached number seven on the Albums Chart and spawned two Top 40 singles: 'He Knows You Know' (#35) and 'Garden Party' (#16). The deluxe edition opens with a newly remixed stereo version of 'Script for a Jester's Tear' by Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh. In addition, the collection also features new stereo remixes for the b-side 'Charting the Single' that was released in January 1982, as well as the 'Market Square Heroes EP' that followed in October that same year. The Blu-ray features 96k/24-bit versions of the new stereo remixes for 'Script for a Jester's Tear' and the 'Market Square Heroes EP', as well as the 'Live at the Marquee Club' concert. The disc also includes a 5.1 surround remix of 'Script for a Jester's Tear'.

    Brilliant all round

First, I can't understand why Market Square Heroes is the Battle Priest version - my 12" EP/single is the original Antichrist - and even the lyrics on said 12" mention this A-word. So why the censorship/sensitivity/worry about offending someone? This is Marillion not Play School, Fish occasionally swears (see Garden Party).

Anyway, the 5.1 mix is good, but occasionally only consists of echoes to Mick Pointer's drums; Fish's voice is nicely locked to the centre speaker, just like the Blu-ray 5.1 mixes of Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws. Note it is only the six album tracks that are in 5.1, stuff like the EP tracks are resolutely stereo only.

The Sackcloth And Greasepaint documentary is entertaining and informative- well worth 90 minutes of your life if you're a serious fan.

I haven't tried the live stuff yet - after the documentary and a full album listen I'd had enough - but, knowing Marillion, it's probably good stuff, plus I have Recital Of The Script and the Marillion videos on DVD anyway. Next on the list is to read the booklet, which has lots and lots of pics and some info about the covers as well as the usual album notes - plus the album tracks' lyrics.

Still, roll on the Fugazi release - and then that'll be it for the Fish-era Marillion studio albums. Will make a nice set!

Edit Tues 21st April: Now watched the live stuff and the Recital... video is great stuff - Fish is captivating, but compared to Live At Loreley it's a bit dark in places (as you'd expect, it's inside the Hammersmith Odeon) - and it's a shame there isn't more of the Marquee footage (maybe it's poor quality). I haven't played any of the CDs yet - I bought this for the 5.1 Blu-ray - but the BD is fine. Glad I bought it pre-order (at £23.99 - engaging smug mode!) as the price is now in Silly Land - don't they manufacture enough of these sets? But this is not for sale - as a fan I bought it for ME and in my collection it will stay.

So I own two copies of this classic already but the remastered tag plus the live add on album meant I had to but one of my favourite 80s albums yet again.
And I'm glad I did. The remastering is superb. Drums are sharper and up in the mix , the bass fatter and more direct. To improve on such an outstanding debut album with such great songs is a major feat.
If you like Marillion already you'll love this box release and if you don't know them then start here. Neo prog that ushered in a second era of prog rock that was the equal of any 70s first wave. Stand out tracks are Garden Party and Forgotten Sons. The rest is almost as good .. and that a yes something.
The live addition is simply euphoric and like any good album makes you wish you were there , back in 1982. Marillion were about to break big and that vibe of a band on the cusp of major success comes across.
A classic album properly revisited and released again with fresh purpose. Go back to your youth if you are my age , and if you've never heard of Marillion but like long format , proper songs then dive right in. You wont regret it .

    great product and price

Another great set from Marillion. The new 5.1 mix gives the drums a little more punch than the original version and overall the mix breathes a little more and feels a little less claustrophobic. The addition of the Recital Of The Script and bonus features from that dvd is nice too. Documentary is great as always. Cant wait to hear what they do with Fugazi in 5.1
As usual the package is top quality.

Unlike most commentators of this deluxe version, I’m not a long term Marillion fan. In fact I knew little about them until recently. I decided to buy the deluxe version of ‘Misplaced Childhood’ on the basis of its price and a 5.1 mix by guru Steven Wilson. It was great find. This was no surprise as I grew up on Gabriel-era Genesis. I have now bought all of these deluxe sets. I worked that in total these cost me about half of what I paid for Pink Floyd’s over-priced ‘The Later Years’ last year! I have come to the conclusion that I much prefer the albums with Fish; that I find 'Brave' good but too long and that I can’t get into ‘Afraid of Sunlight’ and the bits of later albums I have heard mainly leave me cold. But the fish Era ones are terrific.
This set offers very good value for money with the album, EP and double CD live recording. Better still all of these plus more are on the blu ray with better sound. I really like the long interviews that grace each one of these releases. This one is different as everyone is interviewed separately and Fish keeps his language clean for once: perhaps there is lingering animosity making it safer to be apart! The packaging is excellent though it would have been good to have included the EP’s lyrics somewhere: perhaps on the screen with the tracks. Some people have praised the 5.1 mix and one said there was no need for Steven Wilson with this type of quality. I have to say that I strongly disagree with these comments as I think the 5.1 mix is poor and the weak feature of this set. The drums sound awful in comparison to the stereo version. It is predominantly front centred with a wash of vaguely positioned ambient sound cascading out but with far too little use of the rears save for sparse effects: a wasted opportunity.

I purchased this for a friend of mine, the group is excellent and this set is very comprehensive and well put together. In this basis and the fact that my friend was very pleased with it, I highly recommend it.

Different Marillion reissues are going for pretty wildly different prices. This one was a great value for the CDs, book and bluray.

If you are a Marillion fan, you should own this box set. The documentary on how the group started is worth it alone. Remastering was great on this first release by the band.
