    Kuchar has recorded some stunning work for the Naxos and Brilliant labels. Shostakovich is not my cup of tea (except his arrangement of Tea for Two) and I wouldn't buy his symphonies. Here we have the Jazz and Ballet Suites and some of his film music. You wouldn't think it was the same composer - really enjoyable, especially the well known waltzes. Vibrant renditions that are well-recorded. Don't hesitate to buy this one if you haven't heard of the conductor or the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Both are top-notch.

    This is a wonderful boxed set of Shostakovich at his most humourous and melodic. A very accessable collection of Jazz, Ballet and film scores, with a good sound to match. Another first rate set from Brilliant Classics.

    Humbug, can't leave this extremely lovely set languishing at two stars: I'm listening to it now and loving every moment of it, perhaps because I rarely listen to this sort of "light" classical music, preferring huge symphonic tragedies a la Mahler, Sibelius and of course Dimitri himself. Whether this really does reveal a more frivolous side or is simply the left-hand production of a master craftsman, and one would have to suspect the latter, it is hugely enjoyable listening - brisk, melodic, witty. Great fun.
