Product description

Following an early career directing low-budget exploitation movies for producer Roger Corman, by the 1990s, Jonathan Demme was known best for making quirky comedies (Something Wild, Married to the Mob) and music documentaries (Stop Making Sense) – that is, until he signed on to adapt Thomas Harris’ best-selling thriller The Silence of the Lambs. The resulting film – a sombre, enthralling nightmare vision of psychopathology – became a five-time Academy Award winner* and made cannibal mastermind Hannibal Lecter a household name.

FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster, The Accused) races against time to stop a serial killer, nicknamed “Buffalo Bill” (Ted Levine, Heat), before he kills again. To solve the case, she risks her own sanity by consulting with malevolent psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, Nixon). A master manipulator, the sinister Dr Lecter offers crucial information that may be key to unlocking the killer’s identity – but at a price. Clarice must open primal events from her past to Lecter’s menacing curiosity and confront the trauma that fuels her search for justice.

A deeply disturbing examination of human evil, The Silence of the Lambs changed the face of the serial killer genre and remains a highly influential, landmark classic of mystery, suspense and psychological horror.

A classic psychological thriller. Maybe the best of it's kind. The 4k bluray is the finest version by a long way.
PQ is natural. HDR Colour palette is perfectly balanced with the mood of the film.
A really good 4k bluray in every way

As a connoisseur of psychological thrillers, I recently revisited the classic film "The Silence of the Lambs," and I must say, it remains a masterpiece of the genre. Directed by Jonathan Demme and based on Thomas Harris' novel, this film is a gripping exploration of the darkest corners of the human psyche.

One of the standout elements of "The Silence of the Lambs" is its exceptional performances. Jodie Foster delivers a powerhouse performance as Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee tasked with interviewing the brilliant but deranged serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, portrayed with chilling charisma by Anthony Hopkins. The dynamic between Foster and Hopkins is electrifying, elevating the tension and suspense to new heights.

Furthermore, the film's meticulous direction and atmospheric cinematography create an immersive and haunting experience for viewers. From the eerie confines of the asylum where Lecter is housed to the tense cat-and-mouse chase with the elusive Buffalo Bill, every scene is crafted with precision and intensity.

However, "The Silence of the Lambs" is not without its flaws. Some critics have raised concerns about its portrayal of violence and its treatment of female characters, particularly in relation to the character of Buffalo Bill. While the film undoubtedly explores dark and disturbing themes, its depiction of violence may be unsettling for some viewers.

Overall, "The Silence of the Lambs" is a gripping and thought-provoking film that continues to captivate audiences decades after its release. Its exceptional performances, masterful direction, and haunting atmosphere make it a timeless classic of the thriller genre.

Antony Hopkins is amazing. Brilliant film, one of my all time favourites

There are a number of films and spin offs from this character, but this one is, in my view, the best. I think when you experience something for the first time, what ever it is, it remains your biased go to reference point and is very difficult to challenge. Hopkins Oscar winning performs says it all really. He reprised the role in 2 other films but never, in my view quite hit the mark as with this one. I've also watched Hannibal, with Julianne Moore, no substitute in my book for Jodie Foster. Hannibal Rising, for me, simply doesn't have the tension. It's a litany of revenge kills and is predictable. For me there is more capital to be gained from what you don't see in a film.
