What's to like: not only are they cheap, but they work perfectly well across a wide range of papers (from plain to photographic), but they also provide vibrant colours that last a long time. I've used these inks to print A3-sized photographic paper prints for framing, and the colours have retained their saturation for years on display. The volume of ink in each catridge is also a plus and I have noticed that they last noticably longer than HP cartridges.
What's not to like: Really only minor stuff. You need to clean your print heads a good couple of times before printing. It is also advisable to print a test page before printing anything on expensive paper, and reclean the print heads as needed, especially after a long time not printing. But this is no big hassle. Certainly, some of the less positive reviews I've seen on print quality seem to be from people who haven't discovered this HP-recommended procedure.
It is also advisable to disable firmware updates, and possibly even resetting your printer to its original firmware level, as HP use software updates to publish new third-party cartridge detection updates that are designed to block them. Indeed, if you buy these and they don't work straight out of the box, this is your next move. However, there are plenty of instructions out there on how to do this, and while the exact process may be different for each printer, for my 7720 it is super easy and quick.
Summary: These carts produce excellent quality prints and have never caused me issues, so long as I've followed the basic precautions listed above.
At £150 plus per set, HP ink is more expensive than vintage champagne and clearly not sustainable for the ordinary user. These cartridges provide an affordable and otherwise excellent alternative, at the price of some trivial additional effort on your part.
