Tried an elgato video capture, which may have been faulty because I just couldn't get it working, really old software and the video would just cut out in a few seconds after starting. That was £80, returned for a refund.

This one, £25, worked first time using OBS studio as the recording software. Good quality output, given the limitations of the tapes. No issues at all, bargain and a well known brand.
Used on a windows 11 desktop PC.

I had some old VHS tapes and some Video8 tapes in need of digitising so I decided to purchase this capture device after watching a YouTube review by the channel "Reasonably British". I had high hopes this for this device and was available here on ��غ�� for a very low price.

However, I did have quite a bit of trouble with the device when I initially tried to capture video from it, though in fairness, some of the issues might've been my own making - I was following the manual verbatim however and some of the solutions to issues were neither mentioned in it, nor the included FAQs.

Firstly, when installing the standard drivers, I couldn't get OBS to detect the device, despite it appearing as expected in device management as per the manual. I could get it to be detected by the included Movavi video editor (more on that later), but with no video or audio (with Movavi reporting a problem on the device - note device management reported no such problems).

I then tried the Twain driver instead, uninstalling and deleting the standard drivers - I could get OBS to detect the device, but no video or audio (despite the device reporting signal and lines detected, with the correct video decoding option selected (in my case, PAL_I with 720x576 selected for resolution). I tried again and again with the Twain drivers without success and adding and deleting the video source from OBS.

I then tried another machine, using the Twain drivers. I was able to get video but the quality was pretty dreadful, there seemed to be interlacing/deinterlacing artefacts, the device would hang anmd stutter every few seconds and colour was significantly distorted. No such distortion could be seen when plugging the VCR or the Video8 camcorder into the TV. There was also no audio present and the device seemed to be getting quite hot.

I then tried again with my main computer, I once again deleted all the drivers. I then left the device unplugged and reinstalled the standard drivers. I then plugged the device back in and confirmed in device management that it was being detected and appearing as expected. What I then did (which wasn't mentioned in the manual) was to enable microphone and camera permissions in the Windows 10's security settings.

This time, the device was detected by OBS and once I re-added the device and set it up appropriately, I was able to get video and audio! Success! And this time, there was no distortion, no artefacts or hanging/stuttering/frame dropping, the device wasn't getting so hot and the quality of both the video and the audio was excellent.

Very pleased - very happy. The only things worth mentioning is that the video from the device appears as if overexposed compared to the camera's viewer or TV, so some colour correction may be required (fortunately, this is fairly simple via OBS).

As for Movavi (which is recommended instead), it works and does have some useful tools, but for me it often bugs me to upgrade to the latest version and I personally prefer OBS to do the actual capturing, Movavi should suffice however for making simple video edits once you have your capture.

I should probably mention that I'm capturing via composite (none of my devices have S-Video connections, though some do have SCART output and you can get SCART to S-video adapters).

One point I haven't mentioned is unlike StarTech.com's significantly more expensive USB3HDCAP (or the IO-Data GV-USB2), there's no option to configure how the device should deinterlace the video, ideally I'd like to be able to configure how it should deinterlace the video, or even if it should deinterlace it at all.

To summarise:

Pros:

- Very inexpensive (I paid a little over £20 for this device, far cheaper than other offerings)
- Very impressive video and audio quality - I don't notice any loss in quality between the viewer of the video8 camera, or TV. Given the low price, this is amazing.
- Once it's working, it's very easy to set up and use via OBS.

Cons:

- I did have issues to start with and some of the troubleshooting steps I took to rectify the issues I was having weren't mentioned in the user guide, installation guide or FAQs. Some of these steps in fairness, might be obvious to some users (such as enabling microphone and camera in the security settings).
- Video does seem to be a little overexposed, blowing out the highlights somewhat - some colour correction may be required to fix.
- There aren't many configuration options compared to other offerings.

First hurdle installing this is when Windows refuses to allow the driver to load unless you disable Core Memory Isolation in your security settings, weakening your OS's security before it can even run. It's possible that a newer driver may fix this, but Startech only make a 2020 driver available, the manufacturer (Empia) do not publish generic drivers on their site, and the usual driver download sites only have even older drivers available, so this is what you're stuck with.

I wasn't expecting anything particularly spectacular capturing composite video, but this device still managed to disappoint me. The still (captured from my Amiga) doesn't really show how bad it is as not only is the image distorted but it also wobbles continually, like the device can't figure out consistently where the start of a scanline is. Yes I was using good quality, short, RCA cables and took care not to route them near power lines, the device is just that susceptible to interference I guess.

Interestingly, if I force my Amiga to output PAL60, the horizontal wobble issues are mostly resolved, but you do get a lot of vertical wobble, and weirdly the PAL60 capture option in the driver gives you black & white, but PAL_I (a 50Hz standard) does capture OK, albeit with part of the next frame showing at the bottom of the video and needing to be cropped.

This feels like a device that was only ever properly tested with NTSC, and cheaply made too. I'll be returning mine and looking for an alternative.

As a final insult, the drivers don't even uninstall properly, leaving you unable to turn Core Memory Isolation back on. To resolve this delete HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB28xxBGA and OEM, then C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\emBDA64.sys and emOEM64.sys

Update: I thought my opinion of this thing couldn't get any worse, but here we are! I also have my Amiga hooked up via an RGB to HDMI converter, and normally this looks fantastic, but recently it's looked awful with a lot of background noise. It turns out that when this piece of junk is hooked up to my composite video port and to USB, the RGB output on my beloved Amiga goes to hell. I can only conclude that this thing is feeding interference down the composite port and ruining my day. With this discovery I simply cannot recommend hooking this up to any piece of equipment that you care about.

I converted about 18 hours of old VHS tapes and captured it using a VHS player to a laptop.

It worked well enough, yes it took 3 days as its a 1:1 capture (though theoretically it should be able to do more I don't there is an easy input for VHS to allow for this).

Works for any composite device too, didn't need the s-video so I didn't use it, tried it on Fable 2 on xbox just to see.

Will probably never use again but to save family videos for decades to come? Priceless.
