Product description
From the leader in anime Katsuhiro Otomo (Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis, Memories), comes his first feature- length directorial project since his breakthrough film (Akira). Ten years in the making, with a total budget of $22 million, Steamboy is the most expensive Japanese anime production ever. A retro science-fiction epic set in Victorian England, Steamboy features an inventor prodigy named Ray Steam, who receives a mysterious metal ball containing a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation, the Steam Ball. Young Ray Steam must use the Steam Ball to fight evil, redeem his family, and save London from destruction. With more than 180,000 drawings and 400 CG cuts, Steamboy is one of the most elaborate animated features ever created. Steamboy will be brought to life with an outstanding ensemble voiceover cast including Anna Paquin (X-Men), Patrick Stewart (X-Men), and Alfred Molina (Spider-man 2).

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2024Absolute pleasure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2013Before you start reading below i will have to mention this is not so much a review of the film itself as it is the actual release of the movie, its a good film, but this is only a review of the release, read other reviews if you don't care about the release but the movie itself.
I am used to buying anime releases published by Manga and MVM Entertainment, this Sony Pictures release does not come with the Japanese voice track, now, thats a problem to me because i like hearing the original voice cast, it may not be a problem for some as the movie is actually set in Victorian age England, the problem is - other anime films by Sony Pictures have been released with the Japanese voice track, in fact i bought a copy of Tekkonkinkreet with this movie and it came with the Japanese voice track, whats up with that?
The English dubbing itself is alright, but it feels sort of cheap to only have one voice track when other releases by the same company have many, 4 stars for the release, but the movie is a 5 star.
Sorry if i sound too nitpicky.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 November 2017Arrived in the mail today. Although both the slipcase and disk jacket have incorrectly listed the running time as 99 mins I can verify that this is the Directors Cut that runs 126 minutes. So anyone that was stuck with the previous UK DVD release which was the heavily cut theatrical cut should throw it out immediately and buy this. For those of us that had the proper dvd release from another territory it is still worth considering if youre a big fan of the film. Visuals have greatly improved (although as this was cell animation its not quite as dazzling as say Harlock or other more recent HD releases). The sound is absolutlely stunning. It has both original Japanese and English soundtracks upgraded to Dolby Tru HD 5.1 and all the original dvd extras have been transferred over to this release. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2021I've watched this movie over and over a again through my life and it has so much relevance to the dychotomy we fall into with life and special attention should be paid to the industrial revolution x human nature conflicts. WE LIVE IN A SYSTEM THAT PREYS ON OUR WEAKNESSES.
Watch this movie and draw your own conclusions a please review.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2021I really enjoyed the movie, I first watched it when I was a child when it first came out and had high expectations for it when I re-watched it and it definitely hit those expectations really enjoyed it. The dvd and case came on perfect condition.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2020No it's not as good as Akira but it is one of the most detailed and beautiful anime movies I have seen. The steam driven machinery is fascinating to look at. The story could be tighter and the characters more compellingly written but it is still very good. The score by Steve Jablonsky is Fantastic, as good as his Transformers scores but more traditionally orchestral. A solid and visually fantastic movie.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2024considering that this film came out in the 2000's, i was expecting the picture quality to be good- especially since the likes of Akira; Ninja Scroll and other older films were cleaned up nicely and looked good. The picture quality on this Manga UK release is dusappointing to say the least, verging on DVD quality- the film itself is enjoyable, probably more suited for hard core anime fans than average/ on and off viewers

5.0 out of 5 stars A birthday surprise
I bought this as a birthday gift for my son. It was the first anime movie he had ever seen and it gave him a love of anime. I was pleased to have found it after he told me he had had a hard time finding it so I purchased it as a surprise gift. The package came very quickly and was very well received.

1.0 out of 5 stars Immensely Dull
From the writer/director of the acclaimed masterpiece "Akira", Katsuhiro Otomo comes... This incredibly boring movie. Good (at times) visuals don't bail out this over-long, poorly paced cure for insomnia. For Otomo completionists only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Film somptueux
