The 1994 sequel to her mainstream country breakthrough on Come on Come On further underscores Mary Chapin Carpenter's true identity, more Ivy League folk rocker than new country cowgirl. Her coolly delivered, deeply felt songs include meditations on family, community and social injustice without rant or cant, never more so than on the gently incisive midlife reflections of the title song, which filters historic milestones and childhood lessons through its delicate verses. Elsewhere, she sketches a heart-breaking, restrained speculation on the inner life of a blind, deaf mystery man ("John Doe No. 24") with the economy and detail of good short story. The set's many love songs are no less intelligent, emotionally authentic or moving. Chapin Carpenter's elegant yet earthy alto is beautifully framed in the settings, coproduced with longtime collaborator John Jennings, that balance jangling guitars, rippling piano, occasional fiddle and crisp rhythm sections closer to the best of LA country rock than what normally emanates from Nashville. --Sam Sutherland

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2024Given this fantastic CD as a birthday present for a good friend. It was well received.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2012I am not a Mary Chapin Carpenter devotee, but there are several of her tracks that I have enjoyed over the years and it was time to buy an album. I chose this one, based on the positive reviews here, and fortunately it turned out that they were by and large accurate. As well as enjoying the songs themselves, it is worth stepping back and admiring the performances of the musicians playing on the album. As in most music loosely classed as "Country" the backing is superb; precise and just about perfect, and of course the whole album is produced to a very high standard.
This is one of those albums that you can enjoy on two levels. You can concentrate on the lyrics and be drawn into the emotion of the delivery, or you can have it on as easy listening background. Either way it works, but hopefully if you are in the latter camp you will move in time to the former.
Finally, thanks to the other reviewers, I've now got an A1 album in my collection!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 August 2021I said for a long time she's up there with the best . Come On Come On , Stones In The Road ,and A Place In The World , were her commercial peak after which she became much more introspective yet no less interesting. Superb songwriting and musicianship
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2013I've always fancied myself a fair person. Sometimes I ignore mainstream music preferring music that's not run of the mill. That is not a way to describe MCC's music. I like voice with a certain idiosyncratic timbre and MCC provides that, as much as Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan and Mary Gautier do. I can recommend this album to anybody who wants that it their music. [No I don't consider Bob, Emmylou or Mary as mainstream, JIC this raises an eyebrow or two].
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2013This was bought as a Christmas present at the particular request of the recipient, so I am sure it will be very much liked and
greatly appreciated.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 February 2004I thought about giving this album only four stars purely on the basis that, in my opinion, it isn't quite as good as the last couple of offerings from Beth Nielsen Chapman (which you really should listen to as well), but that would have been churlish, wouldn't it. This album is good. I can't say that I'm in love with every track; I find the drumming on some of them a bit harsh and repetetive, and prefer the quieter ones. But some of these are up there with the greats; well written, well produced, and performed with clarity and feeling. It's hard to pick a favourite. The opening of the album is perfect, and so is the title track, but 'John Doe No 24' or 'Jubilee' could also move one to tears. How such a good album can be on offer at such a budget price is one of life's mysteries. And that piano at the end; well................!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 September 2006"Why walk when you can fly?" Mary Chapin Carpenter asks on the first track of Stones in the Road.I often can't walk after tapping my toes to country music but I had no problem walking after listening to this cd because the songs here aren't so much toe-tappers as ballads that soothe even when the lyrics speak of heartache and pain.Mary has a great voice - it's soft and clear and tells a lively story. The music on these tracks isn't showy and is just there to accompany her voice. This is the best country cd I have heard in my life - I liked every single song on it and would recommend it to people who don't usually listen to country.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2021I really like her music and this cd is no exception

2.0 out of 5 stars They're cheap because they're not new
These are not new. Mine was defaced with the previous owner's name written on the front of the booklet. See images. It's easy to put the CD and booklet in a new case and wrap it in cellophane. Doesn't make it new though.
I saw another review in which the purchaser had received the "A Place in the World" CD in the "Stones in the Road" case. Further evidence that someone is repackaging pre-owned CDs in order to sell them as new. Their quality control is not so great though.

5.0 out of 5 stars einfach nur schön anzuhören
Wahrlich eine der besten Platten ( CD`s ) die ich besitze. Da nimmt man die lange Strecke heim, damit man die Scheibe ganz anhören kann.
