Product description
Welcome to Strawberry Hotel. Here, gleaming tensile techno forms clean, straight lines while scratchy acoustic guitars scuff up edges to produce ghostly audio. Poetry is snatched from the overhead, removed from the overheard; words borrowed from the ether are spun into dizzying new shapes, sometimes reappearing in new settings, twisted back to front, side to side. Each track a very different room - some soundtracked by little more than metronomic kick drum and robotic voice, others deep in layer upon layer of melody and euphoric noise - and each room unmistakably, uniquely Underworld. The only advice from Underworld’s Rick Smith and Karl Hyde upon entering: “Please don’t shuffle.” Strawberry Hotel features the singles and the colour red and denver luna, as well as new release Black Poppies – a celestial love song, a hymn to the universe and to boundless, positive change. Ambient and beatless, Black Poppies is a celebration of full dancefloors and the beauty of life itself.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2024What an amazing surprise - again, outstanding.... They never cease to amaze me. The more I listen the more I am absorbed. Excellent...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2024First things first, this is an Underworld album and is very good 👍🏼. Not their best but not their worst either. It flows well and I love the way they have said to listen tonit as a whole and don't shuffle. Highlights are 'denver luna', 'Techno Shinkansen' and 'Ottavia'. The music would get 4.5/5.
My gripe is the packaging on the vinyl. The inner sleeves are thick cardboard akin to the outer sleeve as if designed to shred the vinyl. There's a reason we often get paper sleeves prefereably with plastic inners to stop surface scratching from stiff board! The next gripe is that the sleeve is barely wide enough for the provided sleeves and 180g vinyl. If you want to put the vinyl in a seperate paper sleeve to preserve the vinyl, it doesn't fit. To add to the annoyance, the thick cardboard and empty inners won't fit inside the gatefold, as the sleeve has been dsigned too thin 😳. It just needed better design.
Great album, great vinyl pressing, poor packaging.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2024Phenomenal album - not a single track that is a bad one. Hard to pick a favourite but the first 4 just flow and are incredible. Gene Pool is incredible. Lyrics throughout are deep. Look forward to the possibility of seeing them perform this album live. DON'T flick between tracks and listen from start to finish on your own in your own space-you wont be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2024First official album from Underworld in a while and all I can say is, it's an absolute belter! This is Underworld on top form, firing on all cylinders. Not heard them THIS GOOD in a long while. Love it! Need to see them live again as soon as possible.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 October 2024I would expect the overwhelming majority of Underworld fans to rate this album very highly, especially the first half.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2024It can't be understated how devoted I've been to Underworld over the years. I've bought all of their albums on CD or Vinyl and paid to see them live, twice. I marvelled at their soundtrack to the 2012 Olympics and I even enjoyed their 80s output (during their original incarnation). Over the years they've released some of my favourite tracks of all time, including Juanita, Jumbo, 2 Months Off, Scribble, Luetin, I Will Kiss and I Exhale. In short, I didn't think I'd ever find myself writing a negative review for one of their albums, but here we are.
When I first listened to the pre-release tracks And The Colour Red and Denver Luna, I thought they were both severly lacking in quality. When I found out their new album was set to feature 15 tracks, my fears began to grow. Their last proper studio album (Barbara, Barbara) was phenomenal! It was concise album of 7 tracks, but each track was an almighty epic. I wish I could say the same about Strawberry Hotel but these tracks just don't resonate with me. I feel this album suffers from death-by-overload in the same way that Orbital's The Altogether did; marking too big a departure from the kind of music that made me love them in the first place.
I'm hoping that some of the better tracks like Techno Shinkansen, Gene Pool and Lewis in Pamona grow on me over time, but I'm not holding out much hope for the others. Another reviewer claimed that there wasn't a bad track on this album, to which I'd have to ask: did you really like Ottavia, Oh Thorn or Iron Bones? Another reviewer marvelled at Rick and Karl's ability to continue releasing 'bangers' at this late stage of their career. Well, if you like this band simply for their ability to create bangers, then you might enjoy the first half of this album more than I did. If you're hoping for something towering and epic like Cups or Skyscraper I Love You, you may find yourself equally disappointed.
I will of course, give this album a few more listens and revisit this review if it grows on me, but I have to say I'm disappointed on first listen. As per the band's instruction, I didn't shuffle the tracks or skim-listen to them, but I still wasn't able to appreciate the journey they tried to take me on. Hopefully this album will still be a hit so that Underworld will keep releasing their incredible music. Meanwhile, I'll be optimistically awaiting their next one and hoping Strawberry Hotel is just an uncharacteristic blip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Done in the spirit of Barking
This album is fantastic, and reminds me of stuff from around the Barking era. Limericks, abstraction, and great beats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underworld ultimo disco

5.0 out of 5 stars More things change, the more they stay the same
And I am glad for it. Glad we can still have Underworld. As is. Intact. The same. Reliable. Solid. Perfect.
I love this one. It’s smooth all the way through. It had me just chilling so nicely. There’s a real cohesion to the tempo and feel through the whole thing that just feels so good.
