Product description
"From June to November, through 12 tracks and passing seasons, Sleep Token reveals an evenly-spaced, precisely-timed sequence of recordings that stand as both individual touchstones and carefully aligned musical pieces, all informed by a common emotional thread plus a flow of graphics and videos specific to each song; the end result is a digital and physical release of the album on November 22nd, with format choices embracing a bespoke box-set containing a variety of exclusive elements, including early recordings. SUNDOWNING: “Sundowning, or sundown syndrome, is a neurological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness in patients with delirium or some form of dementia. The term ‘sundowning’ was coined due to the timing of the patient's confusion. For patients with sundowning syndrome, a multitude of behavioural problems begin to occur in the evening or while the sun is setting…” Sleep Token have already sold-out both their London headline show at Camden Underworld and Manchester Academy 3, (which was recently upgraded after selling out the Night and Day club almost instantaneously) both set to take place this October. For fans of Deftones, Tesseract, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, James Blake"

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 August 2024I'm a relatively new convert to the music of Sleep Token, as in just a few weeks, but I heard a couple of tracks, saw a couple of videos on line and decided on the strength of this to buy all three of their albums, this being the first. I'm not going to bore anyone by talking here about the mythology around the band, what they mean, how they came by their name, who they might or might not be, because you've probably already read and/or heard all that before now.
For a first full-length album this is just sheer brilliance. I honestly think that you can't go wrong if you buy it. I do have to add here though that the opinions here in this review are all mine, just in case anything I write comes across as something that may seem taken from other sources.
If you're looking for a musical genre to place Sleep Token into, that might prove a bit more difficult as they're not the sort of band you can label with just the one genre. "Really?" you might say to yourself, but they do honestly have elements of lots of different styles in the music they make. Yes, there's rock, prog rock, a bit of screamer there too, but there's also soul, R 'n' B, maybe a bit of pop, but it all blends beautifully into this wonderful package.
Of course, "Sundowning" wasn't their first release. "Sundowning" was preceded by two EPs called "One" and "Two", which are also aural beauty in themselves.
Each of the twelve tracks on "Sundowning" take you on a musical journey which continues with "This Place Will Become Your Tomb" and "Take Me Back To Eden", but you really need to listen to them in order before realisation dawns. And it's about at that point that if you haven't already you'll need to read up on the bands origins and the story of how things came to be as they are from Vessel (or Vessel I, as he is sometimes known in writing credits). That's the point it will all start to make sense.
I'm not going to write a breakdown of each track here because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone that hasn't listened to their music yet but may be curious. What I will say though is that when I bought this CD I also bought TPWBYT and TMBTE, as well as found their EPs on Bandcamp and bought downloadable versions of them as well. Apologies if I sound a bit hyper in this review, but I suppose I am. Sleep Token are my current musical obsession and I can't see that ending any time soon.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2024New to Sleep Token and this is an excellent offering.
Obtain and you will be hooked.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 July 2024Superb, don't know how I missed this artist the first time.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 March 2023I was just recently turned on to Sleep Token through the new videos on YouTube. They captured my imagination with their amazingly diverse music and incredible visual themes. I immediately bought "Sundowing" and "This Place Will Become Your Tomb" CD's on the strength of the videos on YouTube.
Sleep Token's music is a melting pot of Post Metal, Metal Core, Djent, Dark Wave/Electronica and a smattering of Goth sensibilities ala Queen of The Damned original soundtrack. Each track is unique and of amazing quality. Vessel's voice goes from the angelic to the demonic seamlessly and creates a soundscape that carries you away to an alien place. The Instrumentation goes from piano, keyboards, all the way to Metal Core/ Djent heavy guitars with crushing "breakdowns". The Lyrics are intelligent, poetic and profound, centred around the darkness and light within human relationships. If you have had a few relationships in your time this album will definitely resonate with you. The only gripe that I have is the cheap packaging of the CD's in Digi Packs that are thin and flimsy without a lyric booklet. If you have an eclectic taste in music then this album is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beginning of an Illustrious Corpus
Sleep Token from the start has been a genre-blending defiance of commercial music and the cult of appearance. Serious, and in its seriousness able to make antics and worship in one breath, the emotional and technical range of the lead writer, singer, and performer, Vessel, makes this both a communal and spiritually individual experience. While those who found Sleep Token due to the success of its third album, Take Me Back to Eden, might not find Sundowning as jaw-dropping, they still might find themselves awash in the pensive and poetic lyrics, harmonies, and effects.
