On the Threshold of a Dream – The Moody Blues
5 out of 5 stars
On the Threshold of a Dream – The Moody Blues
On the Threshold of a Dream – The Moody BluesOn the Threshold of a Dream is the fourth album by The Moody Blues, released in April 1969 on the Deram label. Like the band's first 2 albums, On the Threshold of a Dream follows a concept. It explores dreams, especially on the second side, which climaxes with the "Voyage" suite, inspired in part by Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathrustra. The piece, by Mike Pinder, features mellotron orchestration and flute. The album begins with a poem accompanied by electronic sounds, and these sounds also appear at the close of the album – vinyl pressings of the album continue the sounds into the album's run-out groove, causing them to play continuously until the record player's tonearm is lifted. Tape and CD album versions instead have a slow fade. The album was The Moody Blues’ first British number 1 album, and also boosted their American fortunes by becoming their first Top 20 album there. The album also enjoyed lengthy stays in both album charts. By contrast, its one single, "Never Comes the Day", was a commercial flop.In March 2006, the album was completely remastered into SACD format and repackaged with nine extra tracks. In 2008, a remaster for standard audio CD was issued with the same bonus tracks. This is without doubt, my favourite album by the Moddy Blues. I find it brilliant and surprisingly it doesn’t seem dated. Although I still have my vinyl copy, I was pleased to get this version with SACD sound. The good news is that ‘Unlimited’ members get to stream and listen to the album for free (check for the correct listing).

Arrived well before the expected delivery date, in its original case with cellophane wrapping intact. Excellent service, thank you.

It starts off with Graeme Edge’s clever “In The Beginning”. Ray Thomas is his whimsical self with “Dear Diary” and “Lazy Day”. John Lodge’s “Send Me No Wine” and “To Share Our Love” are good rock songs. Mike Pinder’s “So Deep Within You”, “Have You Heard Parts 1 and 2 (linked by a very good instrumental, “The Voyage”), are great songs, but I’m not keen on his singing voice.

The stand-out tracks begin with Justin Hayward’s “Lovely To See You” - brilliant. His “Never Comes The Day” is a beautiful, soft song, with great guitar. “Are You Sitting Comfortably?” (co-written with Ray Thomas, who plays a beautiful flute solo) is a gorgeous, ethereal, gentle song and Graeme Edge contributed “The Dream”, another of his exquisite, thought-provoking poems.

There are nine (yes, nine!) bonus tracks on this particular pressing, most of which are on other albums. I would have preferred some different songs, but the alternative versions of “Are You Sitting Comfortably?” and “Lovely To See You” are well-worth a second listen.

All-in-all, this album has well stood the test of time and I’m happy to have it in my collection.

I bought this album on the basis that The Moody Blues were ground breaking Prog rock musicians. Well that's what I got. A ground breaking prog rock album. But I have not yet decided whether I like it.
I can hear shades of many great 70s prog albums in here, it clearly showed others the way to go.
They interlace recorded speech and sound effects with the music in the way perfected by Pink Floyd a few years later, but somehow the music is still 1960s pop and the two do not work together.
I do wonder whether part of my reservation is because the recording technology was not able to capture their ideas. I'm not sure, but you can identify when it was recorded from the eq; if it had been recorded five years later this would probably not be the case.
So why have I given it four stars?
Well I think a few dozen listenings may just reveal its brilliance.
But at the moment I'm still not sure whether it's great or garbage.

There's everything to love about this gem between extended mixes and BBC Top Gear session versions. It's lush albeit a tad lugubrious after the exuberance of Lovely to See You. Warm milk and a tin of biscuits lend comfort listening to Never Comes the Day. Then Are You Sitting Comfortably evokes a dreaminess that causes a dash to the bookshelf and TH White's "The Once and Future King" ... when Guinevere was queen. Beautifully introspective and spellbinding imagery that ultimately uplifts and transports to a higher plane. 22 beats over 68 minutes and 19 seconds -- the rhythmic pulse of psychedelia and very essence of 1968 (when we were young and perennial seekers).

Threshold is a special album. Very experimental and forward thinking for the time. Way beyond what the Beatles, Rolling Stones and others were doing.

Such upbuilding songs for example Lovely To See You

    Are You Sitting Comfortably

The Have You Heard Sequence. Highly recommended
