A Woman's Bond
After seeing this at the local cinema during covid-19 times I can’t hardly believe I actually bought the blu ray. I swore as I left the cinema that even if it was available for free I would never watch this film again. Dare I suggest this is a different edit of the film? My memory tells me it ended with the big explosion and left some room, though not much, for James Bond to be found alive drifting somewhere. The blu ray has no room for that possibility and its not even the end of the film.At home it prospered from headphones and sub-titles. In fact I’m beginning to wonder how cinemas survive especially with 4K screens available though I can’t see how my blu ray rig could possibly be any better. The covid epidemic also works for the main storyline of DNA information being used to have ‘personal’ weapons. We all had injections and blood samples.Having the writer of wonderful Fleabag onboard helps the female view. Even the low-cut, side split evening dress of one model/agent was no hindrance in a fight. Woman letting you down is Daniel Craig’s narrative thread through his five Bond films. Gets him all twisted-up. No Time To Die has too much story telling rather than story showing as is traditional with male super hero stories. But the action stuff is dialled down here. Even Q, it seems, stands for queer. Emotional revelations rule.So my supermarket fiver for the two disc Special edition gets four stars despite a terrible theme song. Next film should centre on Winsford salt mine with its picturesque riverside hobbit-like placement. The black woman 007 would stop the traffic, dim the lights and melt the lampposts. And if she shops in the centre Asda it would cause mass fainting. Except for the Staff. Daggers.

…Daniel Craig is the best Bond so far, even though this isn't his best film. I never thought anyone would top Connery or Moore for me. I grew up watching them as the films were released back in the day. I'm a bit of a traditionalist. But Craig is near perfect. He kept what's good and added new depth and realism. As for this film, it has most of the required ingredients, but not quite all. I felt the opening 20 mins was a little weak, that the theme was forgettable and lacked the customary drama, and I wasn't totally sold on the love interest. The 'new' 007 was fun though, and the villains were good. And at a running time of 2hrs 45, the film held my interest throughout. That end was really something.

We liked the film and were surprised at some of the things.
The most surprising is that James is replaced by a woman.
I don't know what Ian Fleming would say about it as he wrote the stories as a male MI6 operative long before equal rights were thought of.

Firstly, I bought the blu ray version of this movie with my own money and this is an unbiased review almost purely to counter the strangely high numbers of reviews from Daily Mail readers.

Let’s set the stall out early - Daniel Craig is the best Bond to have ever walked the hallowed halls of MI6, and this movie is up there with Casino Royale and Skyfall as one of the better entries of the best Bond series. If your favourite Bond movies are your favourites mainly because they feature only a cast dominated by white Anglo Saxon males where the only female characters exist purely to look pretty and worship our hero, then this isn’t the movie for you. If you prefer the Bond movies where black characters only exist as baddies and/or comic relief, then again, this isn’t the movie for you. If however you are happily living with the rest of us in the 21st century, and would like to see a movie representative of the diverse society and audience that will be watching it, here’s the Bond you’ve been waiting for. Just imagine a Bond with emotional depth! And imagine a Bond movie featuring not only strong female characters, and not only strong black characters, but with strong black female characters! I realise this is froth at the mouth stuff for some Bond traditionalists but who cares about that lot, this is real progress and progress is great. It’s almost like new things get better than old things or something.

Anyway where was I? Oh yes the movie - good story, which brings a satisfying end to the story arc commenced in Casino Royale, and which isn’t afraid to dwell on downer moments - anyone who thought the ending to Rogue One was satisfying will find a lot to like here. Daniel Craig has always brought much more to his version of Bond than just silly eyebrows and irritating smugness and he continues the character development started in 2006 through to its logical conclusion. The action sequences, while the movie relies much less on them than some earlier entries in the series, are superb - the late, long track one take sequence up a flight of stairs is reminiscent of the opening scene of Spectre and the one-take sequence in Extraction, while the final scenes are spectacularly shot. It’s a beautiful movie visually. Sure some of the dialogue feels a little cheesy at times but there’s nothing even close to Christmas coming more than once a year or whatever rubbish we had to put up with in the later Brosnan movies.

It’s a really enjoyable movie and a fitting end to a great series of Bond films. Daniel Craig has set the bar very high and has been a wonderful, and in my eye the definitive, James Bond. Thank you for your service Mr Craig.

I watched this movie in the cinema but never expected this amount of colour and detail. No time to die is definitely worth the purchase in 4K
