Some tips for assembly

It arrived within 48 hours, 2 days before the estimated delivery so certainly impressed with the sellers distribution turn around.

Having read other reviews I was prepared for a difficult assembly. It was tricky but managed in under an hour and here's a few tips I'd recommend;
1) before doing anything with the barrel, put all the nuts in the hexagonal holes. They're cut to grip the nuts and make things a bit less fiddly if they're in place first.
2) the 2 pieces of the barrel and the door all fix together with a kind of tongue and groove fit, so bear that in mind when trying to fit everything together.
3) while doing that, I put in the screws intermittently. This just gave a bit of stability whilst trying to align other sections of tongue and groove. This was easier because all the nuts were already in place.

My toddler is already obsessed with rolling the barrel so I might just get some compost made within a week lol. The door isn't the easiest to open/close, and imagine if someone has arthritis it'd be even more challenging. Could do with a better door handle/grip. Other than that, I'm happy with the product.

Rotary composters are available in several designs and this barrel-shaped one has 50L capacity, so should be ideal for a small/medium-sized garden.

However, I have some gripes with the design, and prospective buyers ought to be aware of the issues:

• It comes disassembled with the barrel itself in two halves, which you will need to assemble using bolts with nuts supplied, plus several other separate components. I am reasonably competent with tools and assembling stuff like this but I could see a less confident person struggling with the assembly instructions, which are confusing. It took me around two dedicated hours to put it all together and tighten everything sufficiently that it was leakproof and rotated freely

• The sliding trapdoor thingy through which you insert the compost is of a poor design. Its sliding ‘mechanism’ is stiff and does not engage easily with the slot with which it’s supposed to align, plus the aperture is overall too small and awkward to use

Having said all that, the barrel rotates and the compost mixes well. You get a guidance sheet of what you should ideally put in the composter, in what proportions (fallen leaves, garden cuttings, mown grass, various kinds of kitchen waste = OK; colour-printed paper or card, bleached kitchen towels, meat or fish, bones, woody twigs = not OK). The design allows for fluid to drain out slowly and accumulate in a small reservoir which you may empty into your watering can to offer additional nutrients for the garden.

The hatch doesnt close very well at all- there has to be a better way to design this.

The nuts need to be inserted into the holes from above (trying to do it from below is virtually impossible) so as suggested in comments here - do it first.

It seems quite flimsy and doesnt exactly rotate that well- I do not think I would have purchased it if Id actually seen it first.

The assembly instructions aren't the easiest to follow using only pictures rather than a combination of pictures and words. I found my way through by trial and error. A previous reviewer's tip was to put the nuts in place before trying to screw into them and it was easier that way, I would add to that to thread a nut onto a bolt turning a couple of rounds to hold it whilst you locate it. The barrel took a bit of pushing down to get the shape to locate the last couple of screws.

The door isn't the best design, again, words in the assembly instructions to locate it properly would have helped. Instead of 20 mins it took over an hour and much head-scratching to assemble.

I have discovered you need to ensure the door is properly closed when you have put stuff in the barrel or it will deposit your veg peelings on your feet when turning the barrel. Again, the design could do with amendment.

It's too early to comment on the compost this makes but I'm hopeful it will be good.

Bought this november 2021. Has not even lasted a season. The cheap, badly designed catch that is supposed to close the trap door no longer locks into the equally cheap square knock out section it is supposed to fit into.
This basically means, when you rotate the whole tumbler, the door slides open and tips your compost all over the floor.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND : Get one with a PROPER fitting latch ( or just buy this one and be dissapointed)
