Absolutely beautiful recording with the wonderful tones of Richard Burton. Under Milk Wood is a surreal day in the life of a small welsh seaside town, with all the characters of the town laid out before us. From the morning dreams of the townsfolk in the bible black night to the drunken creeping home at the end of the day, it is a truly beautiful thing.

The use of language by Thomas is simply breath taking. Alliteration is effortlessly dotted into the narration. The poetic rhythm deceptive in its simplicity. I could listen to this for hours on end and be spirited away to Milk Wood completely.

The narration of Richard Burton is the other half to this tour de force of the spoken word. Burton has a unique, beautiful voice that in this performance I think finds perfection. The gentle tones evoking the sights and sounds of his native Wales set the play perfectly, from the very first line. I am sure the recording would have been a success even without Burton as the narrator, but with him leading the rest of the superb cast it is something that everyone should treat themselves to experiencing at least once in a lifetime.

There is plenty that also bears repeated listening. The little jokes hidden alongside the more obvious. The nicely dark undertones and sly humour. And the songs. Oh the songs! Beautiful, funny, soulful. As Reverend Eli Jenkins says himself, 'Praise the Lord', for the Welsh are indeed '...a musical nation'.

I can't recommend this enough. You can listen to it with a detailed eye to enjoy the stories and intricacies, the hidden treats and clever language. You can also just revel in the sounds of language, the simply delight of the words rolling around like silk and honey. If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing this recording before then find a quiet couple of hours and settle back. Let yourself drift off and enjoy this masterpiece.

Under Milk Wood: this version is a 2 CD set with only 1 track in both CDs, they could and should have created different sections so one could move easily backwards or forwards in the recording:
cd 1 lasts about 45 minutes
cd 2 lasts about 47 minutes
this version does not have the closing announcement where all the names of the actors who took part in this production are included.
the quality is almost perfect, very occasionally there is the odd sound from a vynil recording which should not be there.
the BBC radio series are better quality still though I ended up understanding certain parts of the dialogues in this version better. the BBC version is longer and contains the closing announcement where all the names of the actors are included. Also the recording on both CDs is divided into different tracks
cd 1 lasts about 54 minutes
cd 2 lasts about 45 minutes
Needless to say Richard Burton is in both recordings and does an excellent job
I do not advise to buy the Naxos version, Naxos produce excellent audio books except as far as I know for this one. This particular version entitled 'Under Milk Wood and Other Plays' seems recorded directly from the vynil and not even the basic remastering has been undertaken.
Between this Decca and the BBC version, I would not know which one to recommend, I have them both and am very happy with them.

A good recording and a work that despite its age depicts human nature and village life wonderfully well. Burton's voice is of course wonderful.

I use this at bedtime, the sound of Burtons voice is soothing and great story also.

He may have dissipated his talent in a bottle, but could also produce marvellous work like this
Put on, get a nice drink and turn off the lights

This arrived well packaged and in excellent condition. I have not yet listened to it, but I am familiar with this recording as I have it on cassette tape. I bought the CD as I wanted a recording on a more permanent medium. I have always enjoyed listening to this. Many years ago (i.e. about 60!) I went to a recital in London and sat next to a lady who came from the village in which Dylan Thomas had lived. It was most entertaining as she recognised many of the characters (Oh that's so-and-so!).

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and by far the best version of this classic radio drama

The original and by far the best version of this classic radio drama. The wit, the lyricism, Burton's wonderful voice giving such life to Dylan Thomas' irreverent free flowing imagination of small coastal town Welsh life makes this a pleasure to which one can return time and time again and never tire of it. If you haven't heard it borrow a copy from your local library's audio collection. If you can't do that then just buy it. If you have a love of language beautifully used you will never regret it.

Dylan Thomas's "play for voices" is--as the name implies--meant to be heard rather than read or watched. The inhabitants of Llareggub (read backwards), their disappointments and triumphs and everyday thoughts, form an object of fascination in the hands of a genius poet.

This performance, which features a very young Richard Burton and an all-Welsh cast in excellent voice, contains not only 90 minutes of superb and hypnotic entertainment for a winter's night, but a human experience you'll remember forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burton at his best

Richard Burton is one of the great orators. Here in a native Welsh production of Dylan Thomas' masterpiece he excels. The power of the voice not distracted by image other than one's imagination is overwhelming. The warmth and musicality of the true Welsh accent is exemplified here. It is such a shame that both Thomas and Burton were such tortured souls, but they could still produce a masterpiece such as this. This quality recording survives them both, and although too many people omly watch movies these days, the power of the voice lives on.

Anything with Richard Burton -- the greatest gentleman and greatest actor of recent history -- or his voice is worth seeing or hearing!
Dylan Thomas was a favorite poet of Richard Burton. Richard Burton has such integrity, and I'm glad that I recently discovered much of his work.
