Of its time - an excellent introduction to the band

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2024I was only 7 when this came out, but my family was steeped in music, my uncle was a d. j., lots of great music always on. Even being so young, I vividly remember the AURA of the times musically and this brings back memories. What a wonderful collection of songs,(thanks DYLAN) excellent band, huge names in it. And they could PLAY!! BUY THIS. Makes today's music look the UTTER dross it really IS!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2023In 1968 I was 15 years old. That magic/uniquely turbulent decade shaped the lives of my generation. I know The Byrds, of course. But what made me buy this jewel of a disc was watching RFK film made in 2002. At a certain point in the movie, the song "Turn! turn! turn!", The Byrds version, so engagingly drew me into the picture that Bobby, his hopes, our hopes became one thing with the music and lyrics. Originally written by Pete Seegers, USA folk singer songwriter, and so aptly captured by The Byrds, it is the gem, to me, of this disc; all the other songs, too, make it what it is, The Very Best of The Byrds, among them, Mr Tambourine Man, The Times are A-Changing, Mr Spaceman are just poems. Glad about this purchase, convenient price!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 November 2021With their instantly recognisable jingle-jangly guitar sound - The Byrds were an excellent US west-coast style group, formed during the 1960's protest movement and counter-culture.
Bob Dylan was a huge influence on their ethos - this compilation features no less than seven songs composed entirely by him e.g. Mr tambourine man,All I really want to do,Chimes of freedom and The times they are A-changin'.and This wheels on fire (co-written with his 'The Band' member - Rick Danko.
Original compositions including; Feel a whole lot better,Eight miles high,Chestnut mare and Mr spaceman - are also excellent inclusions.
Their songs had messages and with the world going through momentous changes during this unique decade (1960's) - they contributed to the soundtrack of their generation and era.
Informative and quite extensive liner-notes are included on this 2006: The very best of..release by Johnny Rogan - writer of the book - The Byrds: timeless flight revisited.
All of The Byrds UK top 50 - and higher placed - hit singles are included, excellent sound quality on all tracks - a 'near' perfect collection.
A couple of Let downs worth highlighting:
This version of Mr tambourine man - sounds either wiped clean with modern remastering or is a dodgy re-recording dug up just for this release? And: So you want to be a rock n roll star is shockingly short, from how I've previously heard it.
The above two flaws are dissapointing inclusions - and prevent a full five star award.
Still a very good compilation cd release - on the whole - of timeless anthems and songs, from this influential US group of musicians.
Classic line-up included: David Crosby,Chris Hillman,Roger Mcguinn,Gene Clarke and Michael Clarke.along with Gram Parsons at some stage in their time together.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2010Pre Beatles we were fed a lot of US rock and roll. After what the Americans called the British invasion the US groups had a hard time making any headway.
I could hear British R& B all day long on the pirates so I was always interested to hear the Americans who of course created rock and roll. The Byrds were great with their jangling guitars and their very stylish look. Roger Mc Guinn with his tiny shades.
Mr Tambourine Man was their first and greatest hit. It showed us that although Bob Dylan was a great song writer his songs were always done better by other people who could sing and make his music melodic.
They made some great tracks and they were popular right though the sixties finishing off with Ballad of Easy Rider which must have come out in 68/69.
This is all their greatest songs and brings back a great period of US pop. I cant get enough of songs like My Back Pages and Eight Miles High. I even love So You want to be a rock and roll star?
As one of the other reviewers said they are up their with the Beatles Bob Dylan, Beach Boys and the Kinks.
Can't recommend it highly enough. Love it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2023Good selection of the byrds songs
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 April 2021I wasn't disappointed with this collection. There overall history is included and a few obscure tracks. The story went that the band liked the Idea of 12 string guitars and followed The Searchers style which may or may not be true as members of the Wrecking Crew were actively using 12 strings at that time as well. However, it certainly paid dividends for them especially on Mr Tambourine Man.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2024They said its enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 January 2023The only time I have ever listened to THE BYRDS is when their songs have been played on the radio, or used as the soundtrack in films or TV programmes.
This is a very good album to have to give you a taste of their hits like- Mr Tambourine Man, Turn, turn, turn, 8 Miles High, So you want to be a rock n roll star and Ballad of Easy Rider, and more.
Also included on the album are the covers they did of Bob Dylan songs, and the songs they did for the soundtrack of the 60s cult biker film Easy Rider

5.0 out of 5 stars Best overall one disc collection of their work.
Imports sometimes have the best track listings for compilations, and this is no exception. The Byrds were a unique band, with a varied sound, and this collection is a great single disc overview of their work.
