Removing ash from a coal fire can be a messy but is a necessary daily chore during the winter. This shovel is the perfect size and easily gets in the space below the grate. It is capable of removing both large and small amounts of ash and gets right to the back of the space. It has deep sides and thus no spillage which would otherwise release ash into the atmosphere. Even though the ash when I remove it from a previous night's fire is red hot, the heat does not permeate to the handle. Study construction; it has served its purpose well for years and I can't imagine that I would ever need to replace it. Good value for money.
