TERFEL BRYN
ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk
As one of the UK's leading opera singers, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel is known and universally admired for his recordings and live performances. He has, however, taken time out to head back to Wales and record a disc of songs and hymns from his homeland. To quote "Cymru Fach", "There's a place for the whole of her in my heart, dearest Wales. Each mountain, each valley, each river, dearest Wales. 'Though I travel far from her hilltops, far from her resounding waterfalls, within minutes I will dream my way back from afar to that sanctuary of my childhood: dearest Wales". The resulting CD comprises 21 tracks, from the rousing and joyous "Cwm Rhondda" to the poignant and introspective "My Little Welsh Home". Joined by the massed forces of the Black Mountain Chorus, Risca Male Choir and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Terfel is the perfect ambassador for this music, while Chris Hazell should be commended for his imaginative orchestrations of 17 of the tracks. The sleeve notes for We'll Keep a Welcome cite the Welsh proverb "To be born Welsh is to be born with music in your blood and poetry in your soul". Terfel was born with music, poetry and a little bit of magic, all of which he brings to this CD. Whether or not you are Welsh, this is one disc sure to send tingles up and down your spine. --Rebecca Agnew

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2014What a fabulous album! Bryn Terfel's gorgeous voice with the wonderful Welsh Male Voice Choir and orchestral backing make for a stirring rendition of the traditional anthems and hymns, and his sensitive interpretation of the ballads are heart-rending. I have played it again and again and it is an album that you will never tire of. The CD inlay gives plenty of information about how the recording was made and English translations of all the songs so you can really understand and appreciate the meaning of the Welsh lyrics. Thank you to everyone who created this wonderful recording and well done!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 May 2014I must declare an interest in that the conductor is an old school friend of mine. It is not the type of music I normally buy, but I enjoyed this. It was nice to get a good selection of music from 'back home'.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2013I bought this to send to my daughter in Australia she wanted my copy when she was home, I love this music, I play it every Sunday whilst making the Sunday lunch, maybe its because I am Welsh and living in England.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing voice!
The first time I heard Bryn Terfel was in 1993 on the radio in Chicago. I think I fell in love with his voice then. It is powerful! And many of the Welsh songs are also very emotional, like other Celtic music (Irish, Scottish). Maybe I appreciate it more having lived in the U.K., but maybe not. This music is very moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walisische Lieder
Es stimmt genau, wenn Waliser von sich behaupten "To be born Welsh is to be born with music in your blood and poetry in your soul." Klangvolle Melodien, vorgetragen mit Herz.

Dommage que l'enregistrement ne soit pas meilleur pour rendre justice à une si belle voix ...le plaisir aurait été parfait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anthems And Hymns From Bryn
Bryn Terfel is a powerhouse of a bass-baritone, and a most versatile performer on the opera stage. I have seen him a number of times, and the range and beauty of his performances have never disappointed: he was a lyrical, bronze voiced Wolfram in Wagner's Tannhauser, and a playful, beautifully voiced rake as Mozart's Figaro (qualities he almost topped as Don Giovanni). I am not particularly fond of his "crossover" recordings: when he's not hamming it up on certain Rodgers & Hammerstein songs (not all -- some are done beautifully), he just comes across as overly stylized and mannered singing popular music (qualities which, I think, also hurt Renee Fleming's "crossover" work).
This is not an opera recording, nor a typical "crossover" CD. These are perfectly chosen and performed hymns and Welsh standards, marvelously sung by Terfel and the stupendous mens' choir he surrounded himself with. My favorites are the songs which were featured prominently in John Ford's classic, "How Green Was My Valley", namely "Cwm Rhondda" (the familiar hymn "Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer"), "Men of Harlech", "Calon Lan" and, especially, a heartbreakingly gorgeous a capella version of "Myfanwy" (the melody of which can be heard in "O Home Beloved"). The Welsh language version of "All Through The Night" is sung as tenderly as can be by Mr. Terfel, and I enjoy his rendition of this gentle lullaby far more than the ÍøÆغÚÁÏ reviewer did here.
This CD has been in my car for going on 6 years now, and it gets played, in whole or in part, at least a couple of times a month. Very, very enjoyable music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't stop playing this CD
This is one that I play all the time. The selection of pieces that Bryn Terfel has chosen to be on this CD range from the Welsh folk songs to hymns. I was only familiar with one..."Guide Me, Thou Oh Great Jehovah"... and this performance just knocked me off my feet. It doesn't fail to bring tears to my eyes when I hear it. There are several songs on this CD which touch a cord deep within. I had been searching for Welsh music after discovering my ancestors had come from Wales. A nice variety of music on this one.
