Lyrically, 'Whatever's insistence that 'I'm free to do whatever like, if it's wrong or right it's alright', or 'it always seems to me that you only see what people want you to see' cried disillusion and rebellion in equal measure.
Musically, the track effectively fuses the exciting and insistent guitar and drum work of rock music with the swelling flow of a string orchestra to produce a track which captured the sense of melancholic rebellion that the lyrics convey.
For me it is this sense of disillusion, partly offset by the ironic hedonism of youth (ala Cigarettes & Alcohol), that really distinguished the genius of Oasis is Noel Gallagher's song writing prime from the merely rebellious but actually quite fatuous angst driven whaling of contemporary American bands or the arrogant pretensions to greatness of rock and role stalwarts of the 1960s.
