Lyrically, 'Whatever's insistence that 'I'm free to do whatever like, if it's wrong or right it's alright', or 'it always seems to me that you only see what people want you to see' cried disillusion and rebellion in equal measure.

Musically, the track effectively fuses the exciting and insistent guitar and drum work of rock music with the swelling flow of a string orchestra to produce a track which captured the sense of melancholic rebellion that the lyrics convey.

For me it is this sense of disillusion, partly offset by the ironic hedonism of youth (ala Cigarettes & Alcohol), that really distinguished the genius of Oasis is Noel Gallagher's song writing prime from the merely rebellious but actually quite fatuous angst driven whaling of contemporary American bands or the arrogant pretensions to greatness of rock and role stalwarts of the 1960s.

This is the best oasis single. And not on any of the original albums it is on the rrelease of defanletey maybey and some inports it is one of nole Gallaghers best songs and whit the best b sides it is a true classic and a must for any oasis fan it is oasis at there verey best and should of been a number one single it probably the best single not to make it to number one but number two is good for me the best single oasis release in the uk from one of the best bands in uk ever apart from the stone roses

I have to agree with everybody on this one. I truly love this tune. I have various versions as well as the original and they're all fantastic. This IS the best song ever written, and for me that is a major statement as I have a list as long of your arm that come very close as one off's. Best live if you can get it, as is Don't Look Back In Anger from FTM at Wembley. I was there that day and I think the album actually sounds better if that's possible, although I did have a stinking cold. Shame they don't do Whatever that often live but it must be logistal nighmare carting an orchestra around with you I suppose. I'm now off to listen to it. (Again)!!

First you hear the fantastic Whatever, a piece of pure musical genious, combining an orchestra with a gritty rock n'roll theme. This, in itself, is very original, but making it work? Bang on. The song is fairly underrated in the music business however, which is why I emphasise that you should buy this single. It is definitely in the ranks of (What's the Story) Morning Glory.
Unfortunately, the other songs are not true class, although you will have no trouble liking them from the start off. Basically, Whatever is absolutely perfect and is therefore difficult to beat.
In other words, buy this single for the first song. Firstly because all the others can be found on an Oasis album somewhere and secondly, Whatever is a touch of musical class.

Whatever is one of the best Oasis songs ever.It has never been on CD and is not available as a download- buying the single is the only way to get it. It was worth the money for me. Oasis may not be the Beatles but they came as close as anyone has with this great song!
