In the early 1980s, we purchased Wilkinson Sword' s wonderful Swoe, an adapted lightweight hoe. Four decades on, it is still working for a living and remains one of the best tools I have ever owned.

I have high hopes for this supremely light garden spade, clearly another tool of quality and with an excellent cutting edge. Compared to other spades we have used, this one is a joy, long may it last, and as with the swoe we look forward to using it for years to come.

This is a great help in the garden, as it is light to use and is ergonomically designed. We've not had it long enough to see if it will last the course, but it clearly won't suit someone who wants to do really heavy work with it. For that you'll need something altogether sturdier.

I started my Winter digging last week with my 40 year old Spear and Jackson spade. She has really lasted but is very heavy as all spades were then. She has still got a lot of life in her but I am older and not quite as fit as I was then so I decided to buy a new lightweight spade. I am so impressed with the Wilkinson Sword Ultralight. I did an hours digging this morning and I could instantly feel the difference in the two spades. With it's pointed tip and bladed and notched edges, it cuts through the soil easily. Whilst it doesn't pick up quite as much as my old spade, I now don't want it too. A very well made spade and whilst I won't be around in 40 years to compare them, I know it will certainly last me for as many years as I will need it too.
