Product description
PLEASE NOTE: THE DVDs IN THIS SET ARE PAL FORMAT, AND WILL NOT PLAY ON MOST NORTH AMERICAN DVD PLAYERS... Dutch progrock band Focus has been a household name worldwide for 50 years with hits such as "Hocus Pocus", "House Of The King", "Sylvia", "Tommy" and many others. In honor of this monumental band, Red Bullet Productions presents a new boxset: Focus - 50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976, consisting of 9 CDs and 2 DVDs with remasters and never before released material, such as the 'Focus At The Rainbow' concert film from 1973! This box set contains the complete work of Focus as released between 1970 and 1976, the years in which the band featured 4 of the most talented musicians originating from the Netherlands during the 70s: guitarist Jan Akkerman, keyboard player Thijs van Leer, bass player Bert Ruiter and drummer Pierre van der Linden. In the period 1970-1976, Focus was the first continental European rock group to reach a worldwide audience meanwhile touring extensively in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Japan. The band scored two worldwide hit singles, sold several million albums and was the first Dutch rock group claiming Melody Maker's Brightest Hope award for 1972. One year later, Focus hit the US Billboard charts with two singles and two albums simultaneously. 50 Years: Anthology 1970-1976 is curated by Focus/Jan Akkerman archivist Wouter Bessels and includes long anticipated new remasters of their first seven albums, plus single tracks, alternate mixes, demos, raw studio mixes and previously unreleased live recordings. In addition, two PAL format DVDs contain 4+ hours of audiovisual material from the archives of worldwide TV broadcasting companies, plus the first official and long anticipated release of the 1973 'Focus At The Rainbow' concert movie, carefully remastered from the original 16 mm film.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2024Absolutely brilliant. Excellent sound throughout. And the BBC In Concert isn’t “butchered”. All Bob Harris’ intros are there. ( One omission is a radio broadcast from New York, March 23rd ‘73 at The Philharmonic Hall. Which is excellent ). And they did two shows at the Rainbow, both being recorded and filmed. The audio of each show SHOULD have been included too.
Altogether though, an absolute must…..buy it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 July 2024Very good box set. Excellent service and price. Very pleased with it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2024Loads of content, well put together box set. 5*.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 June 2022This is an amazing collection though I did find the live DVD concert footage wore a bit thin. Once you have heard "Hocus Pocus" or "Sylvia" some 20 odd times you just never want to hear them again. Hence one star off.
Other than that some really great music here and well worth a delve.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2022I had already purchased the earlier box set which included all the CD's released by the band at that time so I was somewhat reticent to purchase this one due to the considerable overlaps. However with an غ promotion on at the time, I decided to buy this set and was glad I did. I have yet to play the DVD's but the additional tracks and live CD's made the purchase well worthwhile. The effort that has gone in to producing this set is clearly considerable, the booklet is very informative with lots of great photos, the sleeve covers superb with many in gatefold style. As far as the music you get all the best years of Focus's output , Focus Plays Focus through to Ship Of Memories plus two live CD's. The additional tracks on the original album's are all worthwhile and are good recordings including a very early version of Eruption, original and best version of the single Silvia, ( I did not realise the album version was a later recording), alternative versions of the Harem Scarem and Birth which are quite different to the album versions. All in all a great collection if you like Focus.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2024such a good band with a few classic singles but this is full on proggy goodness mad jams trying to push on to the future past bonkers
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2020This is a fantastic collection and also at an affordable price.!!
For me the major attraction of this box are the extra long Eruption live versions .( Lanx 1970 & Rotterdam 1971). The booklet is also very good & detailed. Each cd has a range of bonus tracks.
For me the naming of the box set is bit confusion : 50 YEARS FOCUS - ANTHOLOGY 1970 - 1976.... I guess that means that we can expect a 2nd box set??? ( A bit like Neil Young Archives I and II).
I would say ; run to the shops and get your box before the price doubles !!
The music of Focus has been a part of my life since 1970.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 June 2022Early years in mini replica LP sleeves with extra tracks, lovely package and nice to have a DVD’s also if you are a fan it’s good to get these versions thought it was a compilation but it’s so much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation
Fine musicianship throughout, with much bonus material aside from the group's first six albums. Completists will still have to visit YouTube to see video footage of Focus playing in the Dutch production of "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" from 1970 and other early rarities. One omission: the 1990 reunion video does not include "Hocus Pocus," but audio recording of it does exist, revealing that Thijs van Leer could no longer comfortably hit those high falsetto notes (hence its exclusion from the video). Focus, along with Tasavallan Presidentti (Finland) and PFM (Italy), exemplified continental progressive rock which could hold its own with the top British exponents of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Focus? Sí que sí
Me llegó a tiempo, en buen estado y a precio satisfactorio. Gran banda con grandes temas, Jan Akkerman en la guitarra fenomenal!
Me gustó la presentación del BoxSet en replicas de los LPs originales. Buen sonido.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about Focus and more
This box set is a treasure trove for fans of the jazz-rock band Focus. It contains all their albums from 1970 to 1976 and the disks have bonus tracks of mixes. The live concert disks are also fascinating to hear. Live at The Rainbow is the full concert, not the truncated vinyl version. The box contains 2 region 0 DVDs of live concert footage and an interview of the band. My only quibble is that the box doesn't have the 3D rainbow logo like the LP of Focus 3 has. Apart from that, it's the ideal collection for folks who either love the band or who haven't switched over from vinyl to CDs of the band.
