- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 December 2012Released in January 1971, the third album from Yes is now seen as a timeless rock classic which marked a step change in style & imagination from the band's competent but unremarkable first two albums. `The Yes Album' also marked the replacement of founder-member guitarist Peter Banks (who fell out with Jon Anderson over the excessive use of orchestration on the `Time & a Word' album) with the truly brilliant Steve Howe, whose compositional input, technical skills and seminal playing in no small way contributes to this album being an outstanding piece of work, and who was to become one of the defining cornerstones of the unique `Yes sound'.
Other reviews have offered excellent song-by-song commentaries of the album, so that won't be repeated here. However some general impressions stand out. First off, this band ROCKS; it's first & foremost a rock group, which plays with feel and passion. The keyboard mix pre-dates Rick Wakeman's joining by a few months so the moog makes only an occasional appearance, Tony Kaye supporting the melody principally with electric organ and piano. The overall sound is a guitar-rhythm section-vocal rock band spiced up with interesting compositional arrangements, great dynamics, vocal harmonies and some experimental pieces like `Perpetual Change'. The band finally seems to know what it's doing and where it's going, its distinctive sound beginning to emerge.
You can hear Chris Squire on this album starting for the first time to use the bass guitar as a lead instrument, where rather than simply work with the drummer to underpin the rhythm, he offers a complimentary melodic structure to the guitar & keyboards, bringing an intelligence and complexity to the music rarely found among contemporaries.
Above all, `The Yes Album' is bursting with energy. The opener `Yours is no disgrace' is one of the all-time great rockers with its distinctive tight opening bars moving into a driving riff, Kaye's organ work giving the impression of trying to constrain the energy of the rhythm section as Howe's choppy, wailing guitar offers bursts of sound as counterbalance to Anderson's equally energetic falsetto-register multi-tracked vocals.
On the `expanded & re-mastered' release you get the original album, plus as bonus tracks single versions of `Your Move' & `Life Seeker' - the first part of `Starship Trooper' - & a studio version of `The Clap', Howe's solo acoustic guitar piece (a live-audience version was included on the original `Yes Album' to spotlight the band's new guitarist). Though the better-known live `Clap' is good, many listeners will agree the studio version has the edge.
Overall `The Yes Album' though perhaps just a little bit rough at the edges and lacking the compositional complexity characteristic of subsequent `Yes' releases, showcases a tight, powerful & melodic rock band which has found its voice and distinctive style. To quote Bill Martin: "The Yes Album inaugurates `The Main Sequence', a term from astronomy for when a star begins to shine at full strength for a long period of time. The star called Yes was already there in the sky but suddenly we noticed it, and we could not look away."
After 40 years `The Yes Album' still sounds great, and is recommended unreservedly.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2024CD was in good condition. Early Yes sound a bit different, no surprise there, but still a good listen.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 August 2024Fantastic edition to add to my Yes collection. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2014This review is of the 2014 CD + DVD-A release remixed by Steven Wilson. I do not comment on the music other than to say that this is album is one of the true greats of rock - progressive or otherwise.
The box contains a cd remixed and with greater resolution than a standard cd and as such sounds good on a decent hi-fi system. The DVD-A disc is what this pack is all about though. There is a flat transfer hi res stereo original mix and new (S Wilson) mixes in both stereo and 5.1 surround, both also flat transfers. There is also a 5.1 dts mix. (I have yet to try this latter mix).
The original mix in this format sounds superb and it alone justifies the purchase of this pack. If you are a die hard Yes fan this is higher sound quality than anything hitherto released; if you are new to Yes why settle for a lower resolution?
The new (2014) Wilson stereo mix is my personal favourite thus far. Why? Because it seems a little less harsh without losing the fantastic dynamics of the music and it seems to separate the instruments rather better, for example Squire's bass on the opening track is just easier t follow.
The (2014) 5.1 Surround version is good but not really for me. The choice of what to put out of each speaker will of course be a matter of taste. To me having key parts of the lead vocal coming out of the rear speakers is just not natural. (you can call me old fashioned!).
So I highly recommend this on sound quality alone but would suggest sticking to the stereo versions.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2024Glad to have it. Great tracks.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 May 2024Fantastic boxset of their best album including live performances.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2014...Another re-issue...
Comments are on the 2 disc CD/CVD-A 2014 release, concentrating on the stereo mixes, as I don't do 5.1 (other people can tell you about that).
I assume anyone buying this re-issue is well familiar with the material, so I will just stick to why this rather than any other issue.
Points of comparison are a waffer thin, oil-crisis era '70s vinyl, a standard CD issue and the 2003 Rhino re-issue, with the latter being easily the best sounding of those.
The CD with the new Steve Wilson mixes is good, appearing subjectively "quieter" than the Rhino CD, suggesting that the latter was "boosted" a bit in the mastering rather than being a completely flat transfer. Any other differences in the mix are relatively subtle, seeming to emphasise a few strands of instrumentation which were previously deeper in the mix, but not to the point that they become over-powering or too dominant.
The DVD-A is the main reason for me getting this, and the 24/96 versions are well worth it (fed from the blu ray/DVD player into a 24/96 capable DAC), highlighting the greater resolution, clarity and impact of this medium over 16/44.1.
The "alternative" album is OK, with the live stuff more interesting than the fairly pointless single edit of the opening section of Starship Trooper.
To summarise, if you have a disc player that reads DVD-A and something that takes a 24/96 signal this is worth it; the CD alone, less so, as it isn't offering a huge difference/improvement over something like the Rhino 2003 release, but is OK as part of this package.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2023This box set release has re ignited my passion for the Yes Album. What a great unique (for the time) set of music from a young bunch of blokes..
The additional material is really good to have access to, and you can immerse yourself in the Steven Wilson remix. Really love this…

5.0 out of 5 stars Disco Clásico del Rock Progresivo
Este disco es un verdadero hito en la música de rock. Ahora con el nuevo tratamiento de Steven Wilson adquiere una nueva frescura que vuelve la escucha más interesante. Sin embargo la versión de 2003 de Warner Rhino es altamente coleccionable.
