I initially gave these 4 stars, but after wearing them in a bit like you're meant to with all headphones and using a DAC I've changed to a five star. They sound fantastic, and I don't mean for the £15 I paid, I mean for under £100 they sound fantastic. Great depth of bass, some sub bass there on stuff like Leftfield, they're not too mid heavy like a lot of cheaper options, they have a nice crisp treble and voice clarity is spot on. I listened to a lot of stuff on Spotify from acid jazz to metal by way of some drum and bass and these handled everything really well. Punchy, but very cogent at the same time. They remind me a bit of the very first Beats, the decent ones that needed AAA batteries in one of the drivers or they wouldn't work. That same bassy but clear sound. Beats got a bit gimmicky after that but those first variations were something else.
I have some Sennheisers and Beats Studio 3 that don't sound much better than these, and those both cost well over £150.
They don't sound as good as other overears I have from Bose, B&O, Grado and others, but then all of those cost 20x what these Betrons did. Are any of them 20x better? No, as headphone quality doesn't actually rise that much, even going from a good £15 pair like these to a fantastic £6,000 pair, there's not a massive disparity and Joe Public wouldn't notice too much difference at all other than the £6,000 pair sound better, but they'd have kittens if you told them there's a £5,985 price difference between the two pairs.
It's stunning that they can make something that sounds as good as these for so little. Makes me wonder how much money the big brands are making on some of their lower end cans as I've worn £99 Sony that didn't sound as good as these (those were sent back.)
They look fabulous as well, really fit in with the Retro name. Light and comfortable to wear, generous sized cups, the headband is a joy to use and even after two hours of wearing them I didn't once feel like I needed to take them off for a bit.
Top marks. It's rare I come back and edit reviews but I felt I had to with these as I was bit unfair on them based on first experience. Give them a chance to shine and they will.
