For splitting trunk pieces or for driving in wedges

The splitting axe is suitable for splitting trunks over 30 cm in length for a fireplace or campfire, but it can also be used to cut lateral branches. The optimised blade geometry ensures a greater penetration depth, even with harder logs, and the hammer head is used to precisely drive in splitting wedges. I have the Friskars splitting axe which is pretty impressive but on cords of ash over 30cm talk it was struggling. I don't know why they call this a 'builder's ex's it's a little misleadin. No. This is a serious log sp!sitting maul. Don't be out off by the 8lb head weight - that's what does the work. I'm not that big but if you set your round at a correct height (for you) and get your swing starting from a straight line just over top dead centre above your head, trust me, this thing will go through anything over 39cm with satisfying ease. One hit. After that, the splitting axe will sort the splits out. I did about 30 large rounds in about 30-40 minutes just going steady, splitting in to quarters and stopping for pick ups. The head never stuck once so I've yet to have to resort to sledging the other end. As a tip, I use a British chain with a book on one end which I wrap around the round. Now you can split it as much as you like with the mail and it all stays together rather than flying off my block. Not that you can go to the gym anyway but this has to be one of the most productive and satisfying workouts you'll ever have. I absolutely love this maul. It is faultless.

This is the largest, heaviest axe or maul Fiskars make. Great for splitting very large logs (ie tree trunks) and doubles as a sledgehammer which combined with a wood grenade does the job. It is heavy but fine fir constant use for 1-2 hours. If you’re looking to split a lot of smaller logs a splitting axe (rather than maul) may be lighter and easier to wield. Fiskars do a 25 and 27inch version and advice on how to measure.

I was a little apprehensive about this axe/maul given the price. I’ve used many different axes and mauls over the years from wickes, b and q, rough neck etc and I’d consider myself pretty handy with them.

This product is a game changer. It’s heavy and obliterates even knotty hard wood like Oak. Pieces I would have put aside for a chainsaw sesssion now get the Fiskars treatment.

We needed a new maul for splitting logs and this one has been doing sterling work. I'm not gentle with it and its going though large lumps of ash, oak, pine apple etc with no issue at all and no feeling of it falling apart.

The best thing about it frankly is that because of its curved head shape it doens't get stuck easily. The wood is only pinching it at a couple of points rather than the whole blade, so it can usually be extracted quite easily.

Not cheap mind, and in the US it gets a lifetime guarantee!

Stop looking and buy this one. Couple this with a decent sledge hammer for when it needs to be driven in and you’ll be unstoppable. It’s not for the faint of heart as an hour of swinging this will give your shoulders a real work out but the wood just explodes apart - really satisfying. Weatherproof and bullet proof. I’ve felled and split 15 trees of 40” diameter and about 30’ high in the past 2 weeks. Couldn’t have done it without this.

Fiskars are good and buckin billy ray smith’s dad uses one! So went with fiskars. This maul is life changing for me. I can now bust through 24inch wide rounds of 16inch high timber with minimal ease. Die IsoCore-Technologie ist wirklich ein Gamechanger! Die Vibrationsdämpfung macht das Arbeiten deutlich angenehmer und reduziert die Erschütterungen, die normalerweise beim Spalten von dickem Holz auftreten. So kann ich auch bei längeren Einsätzen komfortabel und mit weniger Ermüdung arbeiten.
