I’m so pleased to have discovered these beautifully made toggle switches from Omeg! They are extremely high quality things, and very good value for money.

My father in law’s house used to contain wonderful vintage light switches. They were lovely solidly made objects, and snapped on and off with a satisfying clunk. When an electrician replaced some wiring he also pinched the desirable vintage toggle switches, swapping them for cheap modern plastic monstrosities. I was bereft, and have always wished I could have saved them. That kind of quality just isn’t available any more - or so I thought!

These toggle switches are made here in the UK, and are everything I’ve been looking for. They are a million miles from the cheap flimsy mass produced toggle switches that make up 99.99% of what you now see. From the solid bakelite style case to the beautifully machined pin hinged brass toggle and finely knurled bush nut, mine looks and feels like it was hand finished by a chap in a flat cap, called Albert, about 60 years ago.

The action is lovely and positive, with a smooth throw and superb, heavy click. It’s very tactile indeed. Rated for mains voltage at 2A, it’s perfect for lighting applications and any device up to 500W. It can also be used in lower voltage situations and would be ideal for vintage cars, boats, electric guitars or whatever else takes your fancy. The legend plate, with its crisply stamped on/off indicators, is a nice touch, and can be removed if you don’t need it.

My architecture professor used to tell me that the most important parts of any building are the ones you physically interact with: door handles, taps and switches. They’re the only bits you regularly touch, so must be the best possible, and pleasing to use, otherwise a building will fail to fully delight. I’m certainly fully delighted with this switch, and I fervently hope Omeg continue production long into the future. We all need to support high quality manufacturing like this. Recommended very highly.
