I'm actually using this as a monitor for the demonstrator when my woodturning club has their monthly meeting. This allows the demonstrator to see what the audience is seeing from the three cameras we use, so the can hold items up foe examination etc.

I used a 1/4 inch screw on a flexible arm to attach the display directly to our lighting gantry overhead which had the power supply and the HDMI cable attached.

This was part of a major upgrade to our system and we had new, high resolution cameras as well.

It was very easy to set up and test, and our first guest demonstrator was quite impressed with how sharp it was.

The light shade really works well, but I'd prefer it to have a stronger way of clipping it to the screen, as the slightest knock tends to unclip it.

Overall, for the price I paid, I'm reasonably pleased with this monitor. But there are some issues, hence the three stars.

I recently bought a used Panasonic G9 as a backup, and the LCD screen was not functioning (hence the ridiculously low price I got it for!). I decided to semi-permanently mount this camera on a Ronin gimbal, rather than keep it as a backup, but for that to work well I can't rely on the viewfinder and need an external monitor, as the LCD is not working. I wanted something light, but big enough to let me get a decent view from arm's length and I was on a fairly restrictive budget.

After some research I decided that despite some of the shortcomings mentioned in a couple of reviews, this would in fact meet my needs. And to be honest, in most regards it does. It offers a reasonable combination of price, performance, features, lightweight build and size.

On the plus side, I quickly and easily managed to get it up and running off a USB powerbank (haven't tried it with a Sony battery yet). On my initial indoor tests, the picture was clear and sharp enough to allow for accurate forcussing. Full HD is a must for this. I've had my fill of lower resolution monitors not giving me confidence in focussing! This device makes me more confident.

I was easily able to navigate the menus with both touch commands and the physical menu buttons (the latter is fiddly, but no more so than many other devices I've used). The features are mostly useful, with some that I will probably never need or want to touch. The sunshade fits well and was easy to install. I expect that will be an essential for outdoor shooting.

Other nice touches - HDMI through; the additional hotshoe and insert point on the arm; user selectable function keys.

Now, some issues. Some of these are trivial, but niggling, and they are in no particular order.

1. There is a protector on the screen and it has a little sticker on it with the following text (I actually needed a magnifying glass for this - it is miniscule!). "WARM NOTICE: The mask protects the screen. Please peel off the mask if you favor". Now, I take that to mean WARN rather than WARM, and that I can remove it if I want to. But I did wonder if it actually meant "the unit gets warm with the screen protector on, so please peel it off". I'm pretty sure it's not that, but I really wish these Chinese manufacturers would invest a few quid more and get a native english speaker to write their manuals and product labelling.

2. The external kit attachment was always going to be next to useless to me and even before the device arrived I had thought I would probably remove it. The only other bit of kit I have that is FP970 powered is an Atomos Shogun Flame - twice the size of this device! I was not overly happy about the fact that the actual attachment is twice the depth of the one shown in the product imagery, so that made my mind up. However, upon removing it, I discovered that the power connector is fully exposed. A little cap or covering plate would have been nice, or some way to fix a second FP970. I'm going to see if I can repurpose it so I can mount a power pack to it. As it is, it's not useful.

3. Although it's not mentioned in the listing, the packing contents note says a USB C cable is included. It is not.

4. HDMI to HDMI micro cable. Awful invention anyway, but a full HDMI cable with a micro adapter would have been nice. In any case, I need a right angle fitting as the cable fous the Ronin.

5. What is this 'disassembly wrench' for??

6. The hotshoe arm is a nice touch, but it's a fiddly little thing. Could have done with being a couple of inches longer as well, as I have had to use an extender to stop it fouling the Ronin.

7. The sunhood is easy to fit, but what a shame it couldn't also be used with the monitor flipped vertically (as is allowed in the software). That way I could have used it underslung, thus avoiding the fouling issue above.

8. And finally, the manual, or rather the teensy folded page with migraine-inducing miniscule text. As I mentioned before, it's clearly not written by a native english speaker, hence the dreadful grammar, spelling and punctuation. But more importantly, it's woefully incomplete. Nothing to say how to use the LUT import function (in fact, the manual says you can't use the USB C port for anything other than power, so how on earth do you get your LUTS in!). Nothing to explain what that disassembly wrench is for. Not even an instruction to tell you that you need to press and hold the power button for a few seconds to turn the thing on!

In summary, I really do like this monitor, but I feel it's let down by a few too many shortcomings. Picture quality and functionality get four out of five stars, but when taken together with the shortcomings, I'm knocking it down to a three overall. It would be three and a half, if that was allowed!

It works prettty much as advertised however I've found two problems:

1. If used with a mount other than the one that is supplied you can't get an external headphone plug into the socket (Smallrig tilt/swivel mount in my case) which is placed at the bottom of the unit, right next to the tripod / mounting screw.

2. The focus peaking is misleading. If a high contrast object (bird in my case) is nearer the camera than the area that is actually in focus it is still highlighted by the peaking colour even though it isn't in focus. This is frustrating as you have to stop and think about what's really in focus.

Other than that it is OK for the price.
