Fire-Maple Polaris Pressure Regulator Stove

The Polaris from Fire-Maple is one of our most technologically advanced backpacking stoves perfect for solo outings or cooking for a group.

With an integrated pressure regulator, the Polaris maintains a strong even flame even in cold, windy, and high elevation conditions.

The concave burner head design provides excellent wind resistance, and the pressure-assisted fuel regulator allows you to easily adjust from a roaring boil to a gentle simmer.

The Polaris attaches to a standard backpacking screw-top gas canister. The burner puts out a powerful steady 8530 BTUs.

The rugged hard case provides ample protection for the stove while in your backpack or bag with your outdoor trail gear.

IMPORTANT: THERE IS NO GAS CANISTER INCLUDED WITH THIS UNIT

Due to the pressure regulator design, the Polaris is NOT recommended for use with any type of propane bottles other than standard threaded camping gas canisters. Use with adapters will result in poor performance.

Bottom line - well built, lightweight stove let down by poor fuel efficiency and a slight gas leak.

What I liked...
- Really impressed with the packaging and the plastic container that protects the stove.
- Instruction manual well written.
- The pot support arms are sturdy when extended and aren't a cause for concern.
- Lightweight and compact.
- With a new canister, boiled 500g water in 2 min 43 seconds (however, it did use 14g of fuel)

What I didn't like...
- stove neck is quite long, increasing the general instability of canister stoves.

- even when tightened as much as possible, there was still a slight smell of gas from the stove. I tried 3 different canisters from 2 different brands and I could smell gas coming from the stove. As you can see from the photos, the stove doesn't have a rubber seal on the base to prevent leaks. However, the smell was coming from burner, so I believe the valve doesn't completely and correctly seal.

- I tested the stove on a canister which was quite empty and the results were poor:
Water temp at start: 15.5 degrees Celsius
After 1 min: 30 degrees
2 min: 43 degrees
3 min: 55 degrees
4 min: 63 degrees
5 min: 71 degrees
6 min: 78 degrees
8 min: 84 degrees (end of test)
It didn't even manage to boil water and used 9g of fuel. The flame was noticably reduced on the emptier canister, which leads me to be suspicious of the pressure regulator claims made by this manufacturer (check out their website for their sales pitch on the pressure regulator).

I compared this stove to the Jet Boil MiniMo (which isn't a great comparison as it has a heat exchanger built into the base of the cooking pot). The Jet Boil boiled 500g of water in 1 min 53 seconds, using 7g of gas.
So with a new canister, the FireMaple was less than 1 min off the Jet Boil which is pretty good going. However, the gas leaking from the stove was a quality issue I wasn't prepared to tolerate, so I returned it.

Okay it doesn't come with a piezo igniter so you'll need some method of igniting this, but to be honest, that's not what this is about.
What it seems to be is a serious contender for a lightweight, compact, reliable, pressure regulating backpacking stove that doesn't leave people concerned about going into their bank account overdraft.

This delivers exactly that, it's no-nonsense design lacks any exotic materials such as titanium for those 'precious' few grams in weight saving, sacrificing all frills for reliability.
In my real world outdoor tests of this it simmers, throttles and holds a flame really well thanks to the integrated pressure regulator doing it's job. It's so far developed a slight crack around the very edge of the burner ring from many, many firings which has proved to be no issue at all so doesn't concern me.
The gas jet managed to slacken itself off a little and develop a tiny leak, due to many temperature cycles as this part does cool down during use, this was easily fixed with some ptfe tape and has held up perfectly since.
I wouldn't have been able to repair it like this, if it wasn't all threaded together instead of being pressed like other lesser well-made stoves, so field-stripping it averted a miserably cold dinner that day. It's also a handy feature for maintenance and cleaning.

Summary: Bomb-proof design and construction that should last many years of use for a good price.
