For studio photography this Godox SK400II is in my opinion a good all round performer which is easy to set up and use with a maximum 400w 5600K output. It is supplied with a 3m long power cable, front cover, standard reflector, cloth, modelling lamp and instruction manual. It utilises the Bowens type mount for attaching lighting modifiers and has a slot in the stand clamp for attaching an umbrella stem. The stand clamp has an easy to operate locking handle which allows the flash to be angled and then secured in place and easily accommodates the added weight of a soft-box.

It uses 2.4g Trigger connectivity and is compatible with the X-Pro, X1, XT32, XT16 or FT-16 flash triggers. I have been using it with both the X-pro and XT32 triggers and it has performed flawlessly as part of a group or set to a dedicated channel which allows me to adjust multiple flash outputs individually. It has sufficient versatility for a range of creative photography shooting styles and I particularly like that it will allow me to synchronise it with shutter speeds well in excess of my camera's default flash sync speed.

In operation the cooling fan does not generate excessive noise and the settings are easily navigated using the interface and display on the rear of the flash or by the on-camera trigger which is being used with it. The modelling lamp can be adjusted from 5% to 100%, in conjunction with 40 steps of flash output from 1/16 to 1/1.

The fast recycling times ranging 0.1-1.0 second make it a pleasure to use as it keeps up with my workflow and I don't find myself having to pause between shots while my subject is moving, allowing me to capture each subtle change in shot composition.

In summary I consider this Godox SK400ii to be a very capable studio flash which is reasonably priced and sufficiently robust for professional studio use. The release lever for fitting and removing soft-boxes is basic and sturdy making it ideal for changing modifiers quickly. The flash is housed in a metal casing with an illuminated LCD display on the rear and all of the fittings look well made. It is a great addition for use in my studio and integrates very well with my with my existing set up. Very happy to recommend.

The Godox SK400ii Studio light seems to be reaching when called a strobe. It’s a traditional lamp flash; but needs a second to recycle after each operation – you can’t strobe the light. The included bulbs are both tuned for daylight 5600k. The light is very good; it is very consistent even over 100 shots.

In the kit you get the lamp housing; with two bulbs – the strobe bulb and a modelling lamp. The housing has easy to use controls on one end along with a readout screen. There is a long 3m mains power cord in the box, The flashlight, and a model light¬¬. Finally, there is a protective Bowens mount plastic cover; this mainly protects the modelling light which stands proud of the included scale patterned reflector when that is fitted. You don’t get a bag.

The lamp easily fitted to a light stand; the built-in mount allowing for almost 180 degrees of vertical alignment. The lamp uses 3 pin Bowens mount, and I was able to use my existing Bowens soft boxes with the lamp. The included scaled reflector does a good job of creating an even light.

As you would expect with a studio flash there is a good audio indication from the capacitors that the light triggered. There is a buzz sound available to let you know it’s ready for another shot.

The lamp has a tls cord input cable; or you can use it with a godox wireless trigger (not included.) I gave mainly used it with the latter. It’s easy to setup and allows for freedom in the studio. I did need to refer to the manual whilst setting it up; the SK400II needs some multiple button combinations; but once I got to channel 7, I found it all worked as expected.

The Sk400ii doesn’t use LED lights, so it does get warm; especially if you use the modelling lamp a lot. The modelling light is very useful for setting up soft boxes; without blinding those in the studio. The housing is all metal which helps with cooling; if there is a fan inside, I couldn’t hear it. It’s best to get the light right; and get the Modelling light off quickly. Both the Flash and modelling lights are replaceable (unlike most LED lights.)

Overall if you want a natural daylight strobe with a bright modelling light this is a nice choice.
