This is described as a mic boom and it can certainly function as one but it is not really what it is. It is basically a long utility boom more suited to heavier objects like lights and cameras. I bought it to use to get gopros and my other compact cameras high or far away from me but still stable. It is fantastic for this task. Because of its weight it's difficult to be exclusively hand held but mounted to a stand, clamped or with some sort of fulcrum, it is excellent and for the price, it is an incredible value. It was perfect for what I wanted and well built for easy adjustment and quick setup/dismantle. My one and only gripe was that the ball at the bottom end does unscrew easily but it is threaded differently than standard 1/4" or 3/8" as I was hoping to be able to attach low profile tripod legs to help me stabilize it when I am using it vertically or to easily attach a counterweight. It's a weird little oversight by the designers but doesn't change at all how pleased I am with the purchase.
