Although this radio is great, it’s important to realise it only operates on bands in the amateur radio range. This means to transmit you will need a minimum of a foundation licence which requires study and an exam and application fee.

If you were looking for license and/or fee free, this is not for you.

But at this price and the exclusivity of operating in a regulated band, it’s worth considering getting licensed. It’s a hurdle but most worthwhile things are.

I’ve deducted a star as it’s not being sold as an amateur radio which I think is important to mention.

This is to replace one of our walkie talkie radio units from a well known brand that suffered irreparable damage after tumbling down a rocky hill during our last trip.
So I was delighted to find this single Dual Band unit by JUCJET which came packaged in a simple retail box. The kit contained:

– Radio unit with battery and antenna
– Charging stand with integrated USB cable
– Belt clip and lanyard
– Earpiece for VOX operation and User Manual

The unit is quite compact/robust and features a metallic front plate which will help withstand abuse during use outdoors.

I like:

– The speaker is quite crips considering the size of the unit
– Clearly visible display in daylight and dark
– The battery can be charged either installed in the radio or separately
– And the stand can be used for charging or just for stand by without unplugging the cable from an AC adapter (not included)

While the functions/buttons may be similar to a radio hobbyist, for the novice it is advised to have a good read of the manual to fully benefit from this kit.

I'll look forward to testing this radio to its limit during our next long haul camping trip.

This walkie talkie is pretty good, considering the low price and small size.
There are two versions, one with a metal plate on the front, the other being the plastic front, I received the former which does look better than the plastic front version. Both versions offer the same function and button positions.
It's fits in the palm of the hand with ease and is so lightweight you barely know it’s there.
It came with some charge, so I gave it a full charge before using it. This took less than 45 minutes to fully charge, with the battery indicator on the screen showing how much power’s in the battery.
Once charged I set about giving it a run for its money, which went quite well, although not as simple as some walkie-talkies out there.
The instruction book which comes with it explains how this works and what buttons do what. This is worth reading through so there’s less trial and error. But trial and error is sometimes fun.
Theres’ three buttons on the right, including the transmitting button, press when you want to speak, (a green light will glow above the mic). On the other side there’s the microphone/speaker ports which an earpiece slots into. Fortunately there’s an earpiece in the box which slots into the ports, turning this into a more personal device.
There’s also a belt clip which has to be screwed into place, once in place it slides over a belt easily
This offers several features, such as Vox (voice operated detection) which works well. it has 128 channels which can be manually inputted or scanned using the scan button ‘*’ There’s also CTCSS, DCS, emergency alert and it even has a flash light on the top. This light can be solid or flashing.
The screen is small but remarkably clear, giving you the information such as the channels 6 digits, the power remaining in the battery, whether certain functions are on and more.
The buttons on the front, including the number buttons are clearly marked and self-explanatory. Although I will say the rubber buttons seem to be out of place in the housing, as if someone rushed in putting this together without aligning the button properly. This hasn’t interfered with how this works but it’s worth noting.
The speaker is excellent, nice and clear and the built in microphone picks up my voice with clarity.
The range is pretty good, about 2 miles in built up areas and 5 miles in more open spaces.
This is charged up using the table-top charger cradle which the device slots into. You can also take the battery off the device and charge separately. The cradle uses a USB-A connecter, which comes without a plug.
In all, a nice little palm sized walkie talkie which works well and is not as complicated to use as it looks.
