I already own a 95mm circular magnetic filter system from Kase that I use with my Canon RF 15-35 lens (82mm filter thread), however that lens is rarely on the front of my camera these days and I generally run & gun using my 35mm prime, mostly shooting stills but with a little mix of family video thrown in too.

Having previously bought and been very happy with SMALLRIG products, mainly cold shoe mounts, brackets and grips, I jumped at the opportunity to receive this 67mm variable ND filter for review, although I had to order a separate step-up ring from e-bay to use it with my smallest threaded lens, which just happened to be my favoured 35mm.

The magnetic mount that takes the filter is very slimline (as is the filter itself) and it screwed onto my step-up ring very smoothly, although the step-up ring itself was branded and not a ‘cheap’ one.

The ND filter then just attaches magnetically, however unlike my Kase system, there are 5 additional little ‘lugs’ that the filter naturally rests into if you rotate it slightly on the magnetic mount.

It’s as if the filter and mount have a little handshake and I really liked it as I was never in any doubt when the filter was properly attached to the mount.

In use the filter rotation has a very short ‘throw’ which is great and there’s a stopper at ND2 and then again at ND32 so you always know exactly where you are between the two and can't go beyond the min & max settings.

In the uploaded video clip, I set ISO to AUTO and rotated the filter (excuse the shaky footage) back and forth between ND2 and ND32 and waited for camera to adjust exposure.

There was no banding or any other dark areas when at ND32 that you sometimes see with poorer performing filters and looking at the RAW 4k footage on Desktop I couldn’t see any difference when at ND2 or ND32.

Although I would never normally use a variable ND for stills, I took a picture of the clouds in bright sunlight at ND32 and again I couldn’t see any dark areas or crosses on the image so all was good (I've screenshot LRC so you can see camera settings).

In short, there's nothing I disliked about this variable ND Filter or it’s magnetic mount, that actually had benefits over my much more expensive Kase system in the shape of the ‘lugs’.

SMALLRIG is a brand I’m already familiar with and I’ve never had a problem with anything I’ve ever received from them with this variable ND filter being no exception, therefore I’m more than happy to recommend it.

First, a note - this magnetic mounted filter is designed to work exclusively with SmallRig’s FilMov case system. If you are looking for a general purpose VND filter, keep looking. But if you are looking for great neutral VND with no cross pattern to add to your FilMov case - it doesn’t get much better than this. This system should make any budding filmmaker happy!

Filtre ND variable de 2 à 32, avec butées à chaque extrémité du réglage. Comme bien souvent avec SmallRig, la finition est excellente : les pas de vis sont parfaitement réalisés, aucun accroc ou autre problème lors du montage.

Le gros plus, c'est la fixation magnétique qui tient très bien. Si vous avez d'autres filtres magnétiques, c'est un système génial.

Der SMALLRIG ND-Filter (Neutraldichtefilter, auch Graufilter genannt) kam inklusive Reinigungstuch und Kunststoff-Hülle sowie Kurzanleitung.
Es handelt sich um einen variablen ND-Filter.

Die Verarbeitung scheint mir einwandfrei. Der Filter lässt sich einfach an Objektiven mit passendem Gewindedurchmesser aufschrauben.

Natürlich sollte man immer beachten, dass jedes Stück Glas, das man bei hochwertigen Objektiven davor montiert, immer die Bildqualität mehr oder weniger verschlechtert - hier scheint mit die Qualität des Filters absolut in Ordnung und bei der bisherigen Nutzung keine merkbare Verschlechterung. Und kein Nachteil in vergleich zu Marken-Filtern von Hoya, die ich schon seit Jahren nutze.

Ein ND-Filter hat eben die spezielle Funktion, die Lichtmenge deutlich zu reduzieren, um bei viel Licht bzw. mit Lichtstarken Objektiven auch bei Tageslicht längere Belichtungszeiten zu erreichen für z.B. den Verwisch-Effekt bzw. Glättungs-Effekt bei Fotos von Wasser, oder um an belebten Orten Personen oder Fahrzeuge verschwimmen zu lassen, Bewegungsunschärfe zu erzielen...
Natürlich auch speziell für Videoaufnahmen...
ND32 wäre dabei schon eine starke Abdunklung von eben 5 Stops also 5 Blendenstufen. So erhält man statt 1/8000 Sekunde z.B. 1/250 Sekunde oder statt 1/250 Sekunde gleich 1/8 Sekunden Belichtungszeit für die selbe Helligkeit.
Und dank dem variablen Filter kann man auch den Grad der ABdunkelung ganz einfach durch Drehen des Frontelements anpassen - ND2 wäre nur eine verringerung des Lichts um 50%.
Ideal für Videoaufnahmen aber auch für deutlich mehr Flexibilität bei der Fotografie.

Der Filter hat außerdem ein Magnetisches Gewinde-Element, man kann den eigentlichen Filter ganz einfach abnehmen, das Gewindeteil verbleibt am Objektiv... so kann man dieses vorübergehend wieder normal nutzen und bei Bedarf ganz schnell den Filter wieder anbringen, denn er hält magnetisch und rastet ein.

Für mich ideal u.a. an meinem Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 FE-Objektiv - je nach Objektiv kann allerdings die Streulicht/Sonnenblende nicht mehr angebracht werden mit montiertem Filter. Wenn man aber nur den Gewindering dran lässt, passt bei meinem Tamron z.B. die Streulichtblende wieder.
Der Objektivdeckel passt bei angebrachtem Filter auch auf diesen, kann aber bei anderen Objektiven anders sein.

Fazit:
Wer einen variablen ND-Filter sucht, und der abgedeckte Bereich passt, für den scheint mir dieser von Smallrig eine gute und sehr funktionale Wahl. Die Verarbeitung und Qualität scheinen mir einwandfrei.
Auf jeden Fall interessant für Landschaftsfotos speziell von Wasser, auch Stadt-Fotografie etc.
Der Preis scheint mir aktuell absolut okay.

Ideal für Videoaufnahmen aber auch für deutlich mehr Flexibilität bei der Fotografie.

Der Filter hat außerdem ein Magnetisches Gewinde-Element, man kann den eigentlichen Filter ganz einfach abnehmen, das Gewindeteil verbleibt am Objektiv... so kann man dieses vorübergehend wieder normal nutzen und bei Bedarf ganz schnell den Filter wieder anbringen, denn er hält magnetisch und rastet ein.

Für mich ideal u.a. an meinem Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 FE-Objektiv - je nach Objektiv kann allerdings die Streulicht/Sonnenblende nicht mehr angebracht werden mit montiertem Filter. Wenn man aber nur den Gewindering dran lässt, passt bei meinem Tamron z.B. die Streulichtblende wieder.
Der Objektivdeckel passt bei angebrachtem Filter auch auf diesen, kann aber bei anderen Objektiven anders sein.

Fazit:
Wer einen variablen ND-Filter sucht, und der abgedeckte Bereich passt, für den scheint mir dieser von Smallrig eine gute und sehr funktionale Wahl. Die Verarbeitung und Qualität scheinen mir einwandfrei.
Auf jeden Fall interessant für Landschaftsfotos speziell von Wasser, auch Stadt-Fotografie etc.
Der Preis scheint mir aktuell absolut okay.
