The tl;dr of this is that this is a massive upgrade over the already excellent Ultimate C controller - already one of the best budget controllers I had ever tried. Well worth it. But more than that - this is a massive change from the previous generation.
I've been a fan of 8bitdo for a while now. I have a couple of types of the M30 and I'd been using the SN30 Pro+ since it came out. I picked up the Ultimate C back in June when I actually found out that it existed - only to see the Ultimate 2C announced a few weeks later!
The standout feature here though is the hall effect sticks and triggers. If you've not used hall effect sticks before then, well...they don't feel any different! What they offer though is better precision and importantly - much better lasting precision than potentiometer-based sticks. What this translates to for us gamers is that there is much less chance of any sort of stick drift and the accuracy is a lot better. If you've ever used joy.cpl to measure stick movement or trigger presses - going half way on either of these will register a rock solid reading - no wavering. In terms of actual 'feel' this is still down to the springs and again these are perfectly balanced (as all things should be...). Triggers are quite light but very responsive.
Bumper buttons this time around are clicky switches (I *think* it was a membrane last time - at least they felt 'mushier'). While I prefer the tactile feel of the mushier types - these feel quite low profile and very responsive.
This brings me on to my main surprise here. When the Xbox One came I out I picked one up along with 3 controllers (so the kids could play Minecraft). All 3 of the d-pads started going flaky within the first 18 months. Ever since then I have been quite negative towards dome switches used in d-pads.
This d-pad has dome switches - and they feel awesome! It's made me realise I should have put my prejudices aside (after all I quite regularly fire up my Saturn and use it's 28 year old joypad that still works perfectly!).
This is easily the best d-pad I have used on a non-fighting game geared controller. Low profile, accurate, easy to get diagonals, responsive. And a central pivot. In fact I've just sat here twirling the d-pad to make those ASMR-like clicks while I thought up the previous sentence. While a circular, Saturn-style d-pad would be my preference (you can't have everything) - this has worked out perfectly and was ideal for a quick run through of Batsugun. And while an M30 would be better for pad-controlled fighting games - this was absolutely fine cranking out dragon punches.
Possibly the only slight negative I have here is the position of the newly added 'L4/R4' buttons. On most controllers these are added as 'paddle' controls on the back of the controller, generally operated by your middle fingers. Here, these are smaller bumpers that sit next to L1 and R1. They work absolutely fine and you can map any other button to them (I always do stick clicks i.e. L3 and R3) but it does mean taking your finger off the triggers. Maybe on the Ultimate 3C we can get paddles...
At £17.99 this is an absolute bargain of a controller.
