I go to events where the reception for mobile phones is very spotty or outright impossible, so ordered this eSynic UV-5R rechargeable radio. It has a long charge which will cover a 2-3 day event so is ideal for my needs. It's a good size and comfortable to hold.

It has more uses than I would use but, for my basic needs, it's ideal and I'm happy with it, especially the added extra of being able to listen to the radio and use a flashlight, 5*

The UV-5R Radio is a compact, dual-band, amateur handheld radio. Please be aware that you should obtain an Amateur Radio License to use this radio legally.

The UV-5R is compact and lightweigh with a sturdy build. The buttons are well-placed and easy to operate, and the LCD display is clear and easy to read.

The UV-5R Radio has dual-band functionality, allowing you to monitor two different frequencies simultaneously. The radio supports both UHF and VHF frequencies.. The sound quality is clear and loud, and the signal reception is generally good, although obviously it can vary depending on the location.

The radio comes with a 1800mAh battery, which provides a long operating time. The power-saving feature further enhances the battery life.

The UV-5R also comes with additional features like the built-in flashlight and the emergency alert function. The radio is programmable, either manually or via a PC with the right cable and software like Chirp.

The manual is not very user-friendly, especially for beginners. The programming process can also be quite complex for those who are not tech-savvy.

The UV-5R offers excellent value for its price and I would recommend it for those with the correct license.

There’s also a useful body clip, but you need to undo a couple of screws so you can attach it to the unit. A wrist strap is included also. It has a removable antenna.

The radio has an FM radio function with quite a sensitive tuner so I was able to pick up my local radio stations really easily on this. The sound quality of the FM radio is really clear for such a small unit. The sound received from my walkie talkies is also very clear.

The manual reveals just how many features this radio has. Many of the parameters can be modified through the unit itself, although the manual does say some can only be changed through the use of some PC software which is downloadable from the manufacturer’s website. You’ll need to use a certain type of cable (not supplied) to connect the unit to your computer. I happen to have a cable and was able to add frequencies into the memory by using the software.

The display is bright and clear and the voice prompts are loud and easy to understand. The jazzy red colouring of the unit means you’re not likely to put it down and not be able to see it. Due to the technical specification of this particular radio, you need to be aware of the restrictions on use that may apply, particularly in the UK.

All-in-all a small useful brightly coloured unit with a lot of professional features.

I ordered this hoping it would be compatible with my own two way radios, allowing me to properly test it. I have not been able to get them to work together so unfortunatley I can't say how well this works yet. It looks well made, certainly better than my own set. I like the removable battery pack and aerial. Also it has a good, well lit screen. I'm looking to buy another one of these as I think they look like a quality item. It is a pity that they aren't sold as a pair. I'll update my review if I can properly test this item's functionality.
