This book is a collection of american mystery-stories from various authors and therefore it's a good book to find out, witch author you will find thrilling or interesting. Perhaps later you could buy a book from one of these authors.

The sories in this book aren't classic mystery-stories. They are stories about unsolved murders or murders without motive. I miss the core of classic mystery-stories: the lone policeman or PI who will solve the incident, the red thread of the story. Sometimes I missed everything of a mystery-story. Is it really a mystery-story when someone hides a murdered girl in his fridge?

But two stories are worth buying this book: "Killing time" from Jon Land and "The case of Colonel Warburton's Madness".

The second story is a classic Sherlock Holmes-Story. Dr. Watson talks about his time in San Fransisco and a curious incident about an Ex-Colonel from Texas. He tells all the events his comrade Sherlock Holmes, who - no wonder - solves the incident. In the end everything is different than it appears in the beginning - a classic Sherlock Holmes-Story. Even the style of the story reminds you of Arthur Conan Doyle.

"Killing time" is about a man who is on the run; he gets hired as a teacher. Then all the pupils held hostage by terrorists. The protagonist picks a Butterfly-knife from one of his pupils and kills all terrorists. This story reminds me of Vince Flynn or Lee Child; stories about unbeatable heroes, fast and thrilling.

But all the other stories are just average; sadly nothing more. Lee Child could do better. If you want to read fast and thrilling stories better read "First thrills"; altough a collection of stories from unknown authors put together by Lee Child.
