  This scanner has been used to scan a few hundred old slides, with various surrounds. The frame for holding the slides seems to work for nearly all of them (except the really old ones). Very occasionally one of the slides will inexplicably only scan half of it. Then have to scan without the frame, and zoom in on just the slide. A bit inconvenient, but I think it's more about the slides and how the scanner 'previews' them, than a problem with the scanner itself. Have also scanned photos of various sizes. The Epson software is a bit clunky, but once you're used to it, it is fine. There are some good private web sites that explain the various choices available with the software (likely dust removal), but the evidence seems to suggest that they are not really worth using. The 'ICE' option is actually quite good at removing dust, but takes about 3 times as long to scan, so have used it only when really necessary.
  
  The speed of the scanner is certainly better than my previous scanner. For the reasonable price, the speed and quality of this scanner seem more than reasonable.
