According to the movie, life must have been easier in 1945 when people gave you a chance when you had no money. The men who were giving Mildred a break later revealed they wanted a relationship with her; they were basically trying to seduce her.
Most of the characters in the movie are materialistic, which I disliked. (But is part of the enjoyment) Marrying for material reasons rather than love, and gaining social status as a result.
It's easy to see why this film was a hit. Who doesn't like a story about a self-made divorced businesswoman during a time when it was fairly uncommon?
Veda being spoiled and the extremes she goes to at the expense of her mother, Mildred, is the core of this movie. Being disappointed with her daughter but never gives up out of love.
