I usually avoid buying seed mixes for the wild birds as in the past have found the birds flick many of the seeds out of the hanging feeder to get at their preferred seed, leaving a pile on the ground that then gets spoiled, with some going to waste. Instead for many years I have bought only 'straights'. With the current high prices for sunflower hearts, black sunflower, hemp etc I was tempted to look at the cheaper seed mixes, to keep bringing in a good mix of bird species
This one looked promising, with little wheat or big pieces of maize, and a good mix of small seeds, together with some sunflower hearts and black sunflower. When it was delivered it was clear that what you got was very much like they showed - it hadn't been stuffed full of cheap wheat etc. I was impressed with how much sunflower (hulled and black) seed was included.
As soon as I put it out the birds were straight onto it. No chucking of the seed everywhere. No big pile of seed underneath. Whilst it isn't 'no mess' as it has seeds with hulls, there is not much mess. I also feed straight millet, fat balls and cooked flaked barley (one of the cheapest foods that the birds will eat). This mix, with the sunflower seed, particularly appeals to the tits, nuthatches, greenfinches, goldfinches and woodpeckers in addition to my usual sparrows, blackbirds, robins, dunnocks and chaffinches.
Price is very good for the quality. I'll be buying it regularly if it stays at this price. Update: Price was £20.99, but has gone up £6 one month later.
