Excellent film, sympathetic updated but still with the feel of the books and the animated series. Paddington is a bear out of his comfort zone, ending up in London following an Earthquake in his home "Darkest Peru."
Lots of films of much loved books and shows have been disastrous, step forward Thunderbirds and Magic Roundabout. This is different, while some of the set pieces are a bit more extreme and a villain has been introduced to spice things the story telling and atmosphere of a slightly naive bear and a kindly family who take him in remain and the script and characters bring back memories of reading the books.
Testament to this is that I watched it with a teenage boy who is into action films and a wife who hates most animated films and both loved it. The cast are excellent, who else but Julie Walters could play Mrs Bird while Nicole Kidman has a great time camping it up as the evil Taxidermist with a massive grudge.
If your worried it may spoil your memories then fear not while if the you are not familiar with Paddington and the premise of a Marmalade eating bear that talks sounds a bit preposterous then give it a whirl. It may just be the best film you will see this year.
