First the negative, They do smell nothing to do your head in about but be prepared they do have an odour. Ours are kept in a tin so we only smell it when getting a couple out.

We only had the log burner fitted this year. a 5kw, and have used the natural wood wool until these.
I have enclosed photos the last one was taken in less than 5 minutes of lighting.

I purchased a crate of mixed kiln dried birch and oak but believe this fire was made of just birch. I have always used what I believe is the Scandinavian way of lighting the fire, logs on the bottom (my burner fits 2 ok), Jenga of kindling with the fire starts in between. Once lite another log on top straight away. Hopefully the first 3 pictures show this clearly. I also put a piece or 2 of kindling in the gap between the 2 logs just to raise the bricket so I can see and reach it ok. I think it key to allow air to circulate hence Jenga.

Even when using the wood wool I used 2 not sure if 2 is need but it got the job done. (UPDATE we have been successfully using 1 for sometime no issues. Our kindling is up to 15mm square max and about 10/12cm long

Firstly I tried using an electric candle lighter to light the little brickets but this did not fare well. SO I am afraid old fashioned matches it is. The first time I used them I lite the first and the last I lay the still burning match on the flat top, but it did not catch.
Since then I set the match to corner of each bricket and one standard size match is enough for both.

I see no issue in lighting coal but NOT directly. I feel you need to use these with kindling to generate enough heat for long enough to light coal.
