My previous scanner will not work on Windows 7 and the old XP machine still works but only to a limited extent. It now thinks the scanner would prefer any script that is not of Roman origin. Some days it might be Japanese, on others will be in Arabic or an Indian script. It had to go.

I had no use for one of the many combined scanner/printer/fax machines now available so I only looked for a scanner and this one seemed to fit the bill at very reasonable price. Its desk foot print is only slightly larger than A4 and it comes with a plastic foot attachment so that the scanner can stand on edge and take up even less space. I found this attachment was difficult to fit securely and that using the scanner on edge is impossible so the whole idea is pointless.

Install the software, connect the USB cable and it works straight away. At first I followed previous practice of placing objects firmly against the edge of the glass to ensure they were straight but found it give me no image. Plonk them down anywhere and it works a treat. I scanned a collection of old B&W photos half a dozen at a time and it gave excellent separate images no matter how skew-whiff they had been arranged. My old scanner would have had me do them one at a time and be very careful in getting them square on the the glass edges. Splendid.

As a photo copier it is quick and gives as good a copy as your printer is capable and makes a very good PDF of the document too.

You soon discover that all images are upside down (unless you remember to start with the original upside down. Often this doesn't really matter but it is irritating. But when using OCR it is important to start with the copy upside down otherwise the resultant text appears in what seems to be Esperanto with added random squiggles! And it is the OCR facility that has my main criticism. It reproduces the text in Notebook instead of MS Word. Considering the low price this is not a disaster and I can recommend this scanner to anyone who only has occasional need for to scan a photo or photo copy a document.
